Alberto Puello Calderón vs. Jonathan Alonso Flete RBR

This kid needs to give up the Maravilla name, unless he can muster up something better than what he's offering so far against the Wasp..

 

Better effort from Alonso in the waning moments of Round 3, but little real quality getting through and I've got him dug into a deep hole a quarter of the way into this.

 

Alonso forcing Puello to lay over the ropes and then clinch to stem his attacks. Maravilla shades one.

39-37 Puello

 

Really nice start in the fifth... Alonso bringing the high flash-bang 1-2 directly to bear on Puello's nose, while Puello sways backward from it and in the same fluid motion draws back his rear arm to load up a counter left uppercuts before he slingshots his way inside again to land above the belt line.

 

Puello shows a bit of slickness, ducking high straight power volleys and strategically holding around the waist, then manages to hurt Alonso with the wrecking ball left uppercut on the body from outside, making him double over with it more than once.

49-46 Puello

 

Getting wild in the sixth, but only in erratic spots. Alonso stalking, rolling one fist over the other by his belly...Puello leading him on a merry chase around the ring, looking to pot shot with a blinding southpaw jab and quick left uppercut on the body.

Alonso getting in close and cuffing Puello above his ears with the left hook and hacking right, but not scoring in multiples cleanly very often.

59-55 Puello, but could be closer, even level.

 

Alonso switching to southpaw for brief stretches now, throwing powerful overhand flurries at Puello stepping in. The ref yanks Puello aside for a very stern lecture, warning him for something (low blows maybe? or holding?), seems pretty upset, could be on the verge of docking a point. Alonso keeps baiting Puello into close-quarter exchanges after time in, which favor him even when both are mostly just spraying their fists off each other's wrists or shoulders messily.

Eighth brought escalating warfare...Alonso the aggressor for the most part, but trying some hands-down flashiness while darting in & out, shoulders raised. Puello is catching him during these mobile transitions with counter left uppercuts and has Alonso bleeding profusely from the nose & mouth.

Maravilla's face is leaking plasma horribly as he sits on his stool. They call the medic over. He spends a full minute on the ring apron inspecting the damage. They might stop this.

Wow, no, ringing the bell for the ninth..

 

Puello very savvy in targeting Alonso's face now with long right jabs, underhanded but shallow lefts, and right hooks all strung together in a concatenation of forward momentum. Alonso just surviving now, doubling his left jab, standing off, guard up, resetting after some lateral steps to square up. Alonso now opens up with some desperate flurries and clinches. A minute left. Puello spearing left hand leads on the navel. Alonso lowers his gloves to protect that area. Puello leaps in with a right hook and left hand on the chin. Alonso stunned, but survives the round, and not only that but ends it charging at Puello thrashing furiously with both hands, but running straight past him while churning the air with his misses.

Alonso's cutman jumps on him the second the ninth ends, putting an endswell on his lip.

 

Puello goes low with a left uppercut in R10 and the ref gives Alonso some recovery time if he wants it... but Maravilla only takes about 15 seconds.

 

Impressive rally from Alonso there... I think he bossed that one, despite still fairly low accuracy. He clipped Puello good with a sneaky counter right uppercut at one point.

10-9 Alonso (nearly 10-8, seemed the ref had to contemplate for a moment whether or not to issue a penalty on Puello)

97-93 Puello

 

Puello's right jab, 1-2, and left uppercut doing a decent job of holding off Alonso, but once in a while he just puts his face down and gores his way in, and unloads. Alonso backs up and eats a 1-2-1 but only barely skimmed by each shot while moving on his toes, and gives a head shake for the crowd to make it seem like he wasn't touched at all. Puello scoring well when he jabs at long range, but sometimes gets impatient and lunges in with a 1-2, missing over the head of Alonso, who dips to the side and ties him up.

Alonso thrown in a headlock not 10 seconds into the ultimate round.

The ref throws Puello a look and Puello responds with his own pleading one that seems to say "I know, but ...come on! I'm southpaw, he's orthodox...my style is loose & long, his is a herky-jerky variety of straight-ahead tank... I really can't help it!!"
