I, Alex Morrison, manager of WBO super-featherweight champion Ricky Burns, wish to disassociate myself from recent comments in the media by Rickys trainer, Billy Nelson, in which he claimed Ricky is two fights away from becoming Scotlands best-ever boxer. Ricky will be happy that he is being compared to former champions like Jim Watt, Ken Buchanan and Scott Harrison but will be very unhappy that anyone working closely with him has said he is, or even close to becoming, Scotlands best ever-boxer. What about Peter Keenan? He never won a world title because he had fallen out with his manager, Tommy Gilmour Senior, weeks prior to his world title fight. Ricky has a lot to live up to and I am sure he will do so. However, he does not need pressure like this put upon him. My ambition for Ricky is that he leaves the ring like Jim Watt did, with his health, money, popularity and looks intact. Billy Nelson has done a terrific job with Ricky and has improved him to different levels. But he should remember that is where his role ends and let Ricky do his talking in the ring.
Billy Nelson doesn't half talk some ****. Burn's has a water tight defence according to him on the Scene.
Aye but why even bother releasing it, how self centred.of him...billy aint.guilty of.anything more than confident of his fighter
An own goal by Morrison. If you listen to what Nelson said by the way, he made that statement about Scotland's best fighter if he wins a unification against Fana, as far as he was aware a Scottish fighter hasnt unified the division....etc etc.
pathetic statement and is clearly misleading, Billy made the comment in regard to the Fana fight http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/9418800.stm
What a stupid statement to release, a trainer talking up his fighter nothing wrong with that. Fair play to Billy for being behind his fighter 100%. its not the first time Alex Morrison has said something daft and uncalled for before a fight, i should know!
Morrison is a senile, self centred, old dickhead. In the aftermath of the Martinez win he was interviewed about Ricky's performance and spent most of the interview angrily telling the reporter that it was him who was in charge of Burns' career.
Is Morrison deliberately trying to undermine Ricky and Billy or has he just lost his marbles? Billy is a top trainer and there is nothing wrong with having confidence in your fighter.
I think all alex is doing is trying to take some of the pressure off of Burns, however I think he could have went about it in another way that doesn't seem to undermine the fighter
