Does Heavyweight Explosion make anyone else feel a twinge of guilty nostalgia? People often compare Alex Stewart to other big punchers who came a generation and change before like Cleveland Williams, Mac Foster, Earnie Shavers and the like. I've always disagreed with that (and this fight is a great testament to why) feeling that Stewart had a big heart and was very likeable but was not quite in the same tier as the other mentioned fighters/punchers. Alex Stewart had a carefully matched early pro career and was 24-0 with 24 knockouts, the exact same numbers Mac Foster originally accumulated being being upset by Jerry Quarry. 24-0 is just a really mouthwatering numbers of heavyweight knockouts on a resume I guess. But the numbers are meaningless when the level of competition is so poor. Basically, he inflated his record in a way few fighters had at the time, and is kind of the prototype Deontay Wilder in a way... a fighter who is supposed to live and die by the knockout, with their knockout ratio playing a huge part in their respective promotion. Also, this fight is an argument against size being an inherently good attribute for boxing. Tyrone Evans is the next logical evolutinary step in some heavyweight fight fans vision of what heavyweight boxing must evolve into... 6'7+ and nearly three hundred pound men. Bigger is better, right? I had a lot of fun with this one, hope someone else does too. Cheers! This content is protected
