"Meldonium was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned substance list in January, and since then, over 170 athletes have tested positive, with 40-plus coming from Russia. The drug aids in carrying more oxygen to muscle tissue and would help keep an endurance athlete fresh."

Let's compare this to blood doping.

"Blood doping is the practice of boosting the number of red blood cells in the bloodstream in order to enhance athletic performance. Because such blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles, a higher concentration in the blood can improve an athlete's aerobic capacity (VO2 max) and endurance."

Troubling that Povetkin has a PED in his system.

The substance was only banned in January, 1st. His team's claim that he used it in September only and given his heart condition, it could be a simple mistake on his part. The drug only increases stamina and doesn't really aid weight or building muscle tissue?

Little evidence Meldonium increases performance, which is why it has never been banned until now (political reasons), manufactured in the 1970's (in Latvia, a NATO ally) :patsch

Boxers have died in the ring, son. Cheating in a sport like this one is an even more profoundly heinous transgression.
