    Joey Maxim-Jersey Joe Walcott I

Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-3-1 Walcott

All newspaper accounts I have read point to a robbery.

Walcott also lost to Rex Layne in his prime. He was a bit inconsistent.

Povetkin rates way above Maxim in my opinion because he would beat Maxim, and his resume is much deeper for the heavyweight division.

Yes. H2H Povetkin beats nearly all of these men. Accomplishments wise, Povetkin doesn't have the bad losses many of these fighters suffered, and defeated top 10 fighters Chagaev, Byrd, Takam, Perez, Huck, Chambers.

Robbery is a strong word, but there's a differential of 2-3 rounds between the referee (And sole judge) and AP dude, yes. I haven't seen any non-AP reports on that fight that print a card though.

The one non-AP source i've read says the result was greeted by "a mix of boos and cheers". In the end, I try to avoid writing off official results as robberies without the film.

You also have to take into account Maxim lost TWICE to Walcott. He lost the trilogy. Could Povetkin have gone at least 1-2 vs a Prime Jersey Joe Walcott who had a habit of being inconsistent? You bet

Had Maxim won the trilogy vs Walcott, that would be a different story.

Otherwise you have to rate Layne above Maxim since he beat both Walcott and Charles near their primes

He might even have done better than that. Both Walcott's victories over Maxim were extremely narrow. In fact, continuing the AP theme, AP had one or other (can't remember which one) of Walcott's wins a draw.

Nevertheless, Povetkin could have done worse. Walcott would have been his finest victim by a huge distance. Whatever the circumstances, it is Maxim who holds a win over him, specifically.

You could certainly very reasonably do so.

I think Povetkin has shown great improvement since the Vlad fight. He had some good fights before that but struggled with Huck and there is no shame in that.

His last 3 fights have been impressive knock outs over guys on the rise and all top 10 and he won impressively but I do not rate fighters until they are retired and the dust settles. The reason being take the case of Salvatore Sanchez he beat some good fighters who also went on to be great like Azuma Nelson and his stock was rising because of it.

I dont rate Vlad yet but if he goes on to beat Fury and Povetkin beats Wilder, he can retire without fighting Povetkin and see where the chips fall or he can fight the winner of Wilder vs Povetkin or he can take a chance fighting Wilder before Povetkin does either way Vlad can retire right now but I would wait to see how things pan out before I rate him.

I think that is debatable. I wouldn't yet because as you state in other posts Maxim has the best win and several other good name scalps. He also has more losses and some guys he never figured out like Charles. So far Povetkin has one loss to an ATG in Wlad. His career needs to play out, he has positioned himself though with the opportunity to move up the board nicely.

    The guy is pretty sick.

I think he might take Waldo at this point... especially with a different ref. He has gotten better and more confident. Waldo has slowed down quite a bit. A very impressive heavy in any era.

Give Wlad credit for dominating Povetkin 119-104.. Marked up povetkins face all night with his left hand. Couldn't miss with his left hand, floored Povetkin 4 times including with a left jab in round 2 and a chopping left hook on 3rd kid in round 7. Povetkin literally couldn't do a thing to him even when Wlad boxed

Such a Lopsided victory...Wlad deserves huge praise for having Povetkin on his resume

Povetkin, has looked better in every fight since the Klitschko fight, and all against good competition. What's worrying is that he's 35 already, and he is not a huge heavyweight in todays fight game at 232lbs. He looks in great shape the last few fights. His time is getting short here.

    Chagaev, Byrd, Chambers, Takam, Perez.
    Not deep enough imo.
