Whos this guy? I was looking for a video of Chris Byrd's latest fight at the lighter weight and saw that he TKO'd Chris in round 11 not too long ago.

Lately that doesent seem hard to do and even though I'm a huge Chris Byrd fan I can admit it.

But the guy looked pretty sharp, quick hands, good stamina etc.

I don't follow boxing like I used to because I cant currently afford cable TV..so whats up with this guy? He look like hes gonna do anything? I found a highlight video of him here.

He is an ex gold medalist. Beat Chambers in his last fight and is currently taking some time off. There have been rumors of him taking on Wlad in late '08 but I think he should take on a few other guys first to get some more fights under his belt. I think a fight with Peter would amazing

He seems like a light but sharp puncher with a high work rate, fast hands and good stamina. This is a pretty good assessment? If so he could give Wlad trouble if he stayed inside but Peter might be able to take it and slug him back something vicious.

That is correct. Imo he has the best stamina of any heavy out there, and another thing you will notice if you watch more of his fights: he has unbelievable mental strength. He had the flu for the Chambers fight and still managed to throw 700-800 punches and fight through it. Next HW champ! :happy

Thanks for the info. I'll make it a point to tune in to his fights if I see them on somewhere with a TV. I'll check him out some more on youtube later.

Povetkin was a very successful amateur boxer, between 2001 and 2004 he won almost every tournament he participated in, culminating in his Superheavyweight gold medal at the 2004 Olympics. He turned pro 2005 and signed with german promoter Sauerland. Noteable fighter he beat as a professional are Richard Bango, 2000 Olympics silver medalist, capable gate keeper Friday Ahunanya in his 7th pro fight and veteran Larry Donald. He then particpated in an IBF tournament to determine the mandatory challenger for Wladimir Klitschko where he beat Chris Byrd and Eddie Chambers. His style is high workrate with a good variety of punches, basically a pressure fighter. His weaknesses are that he is relatively small, he doesn't have a big punch and his defence isn't that great either. Chambers had some success early thanks to his handspeed, he definitely can be hit. He is now awaiting his shot at Klitschko which is due in the fall.

Overrated fighter. Not very impressive power, and very weak defense, from what I've seen.

Good speed, good workrate and aggression, though.

Overall, I think he's possibly in the lower top ten, but certainly not top five.

Povetkin will not lose to peter ever. the only reason he would lose to vlad is because of the Size. For all of you Peter fans If Peter fights Vlitali he will lose and he will not be in the picture for several years maybe never. he cannot be Povetkin he cannot beat Valuev I donot think that he can beat Ibragamov I really donot see him beating Haye as well. And there are more Heavyweight's coming with good amateur backgrounds. He will drop down tha ladder.

Povetkin is currently in full training at his gym in Chekov for a fight that should take place on July 19th. His opponent will be announced very soon. His team is looking for someone who's a top 25 type of fighter, but I think they're having some trouble finding one. There was also a delay in finding an opponent because they were in court with Klitschko's team and the IBF. Povetkin wanted to fight Wlad in Beijing later this summer, but Wlad chose to face Thompson instead. The IBF ordered that Klitschko must fight Povetkin by November 2008 or he will be forced to give up his title.

Povetkin TKO 9 Klitschko, for obvious reasons.

Yes, something is strange about this.

I think Povetkin taking a voluntary fight this summer before his big chance against Klitschko in the fall is a wise move. But Povetkin's choice of opponent for this summer fight is all-important.
