Alexander v Purdy - May 18

How is this terrible promoting exactly? I dont want to get involved in the daily shite debate on here but how has Hearn failed to deliver for his fighter?

Thrown him in too soon? possibly, but then Frank gets grief for not throwing his fighters in with anyone who can beat them, so which is worse? He got his fighter a title shot-maybe the IBF requested the fight, we dont know yet. Hearn has done his job here in my mind, cos no other way Purdy would get such an opportunity i dont think.

 

I just said it was a **** fight and Purdy was gonna get his kicked. I'm sure Purdy will be happy to be getting a world title shot out of it so that's his business.

Purdy is only 25 years old, the beating he could take from Alexander could finish him off for the rest of his career. A good promoter knows when to throw a young fighter to the lions and when to hold back and wait for a better chance and at least allow his fighter to get a proper training camp. There are 4 world title holders at Welterweight so plenty of chances for Purdy in the future.

Ideally i would have continued to build Purdy up and maybe got him a European title shot against someone beatable and then pushed for a big domestic showdown against Kell Brook if he managed to pick up a world title that would have got a big live audience and good viewing figures on Sky.

Lee Purdy could face Devon Alexander on May 18 after being offered the opportunity to fight the American in place of the the injured Kell Brook.

Brook pulled out of his scheduled bout with Alexander with a fractured foot, and after IBF number three Kevin Bizier turned down the chance to fight for the title, that paved the way for Purdy.

The 25-year-old is the current IBF international welterweight champion, and promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that the Englishman is currently in discussions regarding the potential encounter.

Hearn told World Boxing News: "We have been offered the fight against Alexander for Lee Purdy, and we are discussing with Lee and the team to see where we go from here."

Purdy has won 20 of his 24 professional fights, while Alexander has just one loss on his record from 25 bouts.

 

A loss agaisnt a world champion is better than a loss by a euro level guy in terms of future marketing and in boxing careers can be short. He has the chance at a shot, if he wants to go for it then fair play to him

 

What do you think to the decision to send John Murray over to the US to fight Rios? Sent to the gallows?

 

Are you guys being sarcastic when you say you weren't expecting this. I sort of half was and so were others.

Purdy has a good ranking with the IBF and was one of the very available challengers. Everyone else was horse**** and Golden Boy would never accept them like Eddie explained in the iFilm video the other day. I assumed Purdy fell into that category and Alexander would just vacate but I always thought he'd end up defending against Purdy or perhaps Carson Jones if he was adamant about keeping the belt which he obviously is.

As for the actual fight, it's not THAT bad. Purdy will surely be outclassed but at least it's a fight we can all get up for like we did for Rees vs Broner. Get behind our UK boy and cheer him on, better that than Alexander just vacating. Purdy's massive for the weight and Alexander isn't a puncher so Devon will likely just outbox him and win a shutout. Purdy's got a decent chance though because he can bang. IF he can catch Alexander clean then who knows, it would be worth watching just to see in my opinion.

Does Purdy deserve it? No, not really (at least not half as much as Brook does) but again, it's better than Alexander fighting some bum from Eastern Europe or just vacating altogether. Boxers can't be blamed for taking advantage when offered a great opportunity. Of course we'd all prefer it if it were Brook but this seriously isn't the worst fight in the world.

 

Murray had a full training camp for that fight and on paper it was seen as a winnable fight for him too with the right gameplan and tactics.

 

Yep as I said before this basically appeases Hearn and allows him to take Brook a different way without losing face.

Think Broner was to fight Gary Sykes so this is around the same level in all honesty.

 

Or he's providing his fighter with a great opportunity, not only to win a world title, but to make a name for himself in Britain and on Showtime? If Purdy doesn't take this fight, do you think he'll ever make this sort of money or get the same exposure again? How else is he going to get major coverage from ESPN, The Ring etc.? Yeah, he'll probably lose, but it's not like Alexander is a destroyer. Purdy will lose by late stoppage or a boring UD. He's not going to get twatted and never be the same fighter again.

Maybe the years of overprotective management from promoters in Britain is why certain fans dislike fighters actually going for it? Maybe those fans would prefer padded records and mismatches?

 

Not many people had it as winnable, a lot of brits hoped he would win but not many thought he wuold.

Hearn has been offered a title shot for one of his fighters, if Purdy wants it then great, lets support him.

They could just be creating options. A lot of you tend to jump the gun just because a name has been contacted. It doesn't mean it'll necessarily happen.

I'll be honest too...my posts may come across as "pro Frank" is not because i particulary like Frank but more because i see through the bollocks and surface that Eddie Hearn is plus i don't like bullying and that's what is happening to Frank as he's an easy target although admittedly he brings alot of it on himself. Call me sentimental but i grew up on Franks shows since the 1990's so have a soft spot for him and have also admired his ballsy attitude and flying on the seat of his pants.
