BoxScene recently spoke to Kevin Cunningham, who trains former WBC/IBF junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1) and Gabriel Sarmiento who trained Lucas Matthysse (28-1) of Argentina for his last fight versus Zab Judah. Sarmiento also trains lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

Matthysse lost a split decision to Judah that many observers felt he won. Alexander is looking to bounce after suffering his first defeat last month to Tim Bradley.

Cunningham would love to match his pupil with Matthysse. "We don't want just any fight. We want a fight that means something. Many people thought Mathysse beat Judah.

Cunningham sees similarities between Matthysse and his countryman Marcos Maidana. He also sees one drastic difference. "Matthysse has the same power of Maidana but has superior

skills. I think it would be a great fight."

Sarmiento agrees with Cunningham but with one caveat. "I like the fight but Lucas has to train here in the United States. Its not the same training in Argentina as it is here."

Sarmiento felt his young charge won the fight versus Judah as well. "Many people thought Lucas beat Judah and that was a very determined Judah . That wasn't the Judah that fought Baldomir. He was fighting for his career."

Sarmiento trains Matthysse in the U.S. but knows that the final decision rests with his manager Mario Arano who is based in Argentina. "I like the fight and I am sure Golden Boy (Matthysse's promoter) would like the fight. It will depend on what his manager wants to do."

Sarmiento agrees with Cunningham's philosophy that fighter's get better by facing top competition. "I believe my fighters should face other top fighters. That's how they get better. Look at Sergio (Martinez). He fought Cintron, Williams, Pavlik and now Dzinzurik. Those are all good fighters."

Cunningham said that he would like Alexander to return to the ring in June or July and in his hometown of St. Louis. He believes Alexander will be up to the challenge that Mathysse brings. "Matthysse is a beast but devon will be up for the challenge."
