A lot of guys don't remember Zolkin, he was a huge 6-5 247 lb. hvyt., who was one of the first, if not the first Russians to come over. He was promoted by Don King and never quite got his footing in America, but finished with a 28-3 (19) record, mostly against limited competition. He did beat Bert Cooper and Carl Williams though. He was tall, rangey and a good boxer with a good chin. His only losses were to Tubbs and Mike Hunter (avenged) and to Akinwande on a cut. I think he would have beaten Morrison as he was bigger and smarter, and seemed to take a better punch.
He actually got a lot of exposure on Tuesday Night fights as did Morrison. Not sure why they never fought other than dealing with King but a good close competitive fight. He wasn't a huge puncher so the tommy would have his chances early.
Yeah Zolkin was a 247 lb. sophmore, back when there was no such thing in the heavyweights. He also threw 100 punches a round. I'd imagine it was hell getting him fights.
I'd give Zolkin a very good chance of beating Morrison. I wouldn't count the Duke out though I could see him either getting Zolkin early or scoring a dramatic come from behind knockout at some point from the 5th round on.
I remember him. Watched his first meeting with Tony Tubbs in the early 90's on USA cable network. A lot of people including myself felt that Zolkin won despite losing a narrow decision. He was a decent fighter with better than average boxing skills to complement his size. Something always told me he had potential that was never fully reached. I think he'd be a good candidate to beat Tommy Morrison. He was certainly more skilled, had the size advantage and likely more durable.
Zolkin was a top 20 heavy at best. He plodded forward and was fairly busy, but had mediocre defense and average power. I think Morrison would outspeed him. Morrison would be smart and move a bit and give Zolkin some angles. Morrison by easy decision if he fights smart.
I recall Zolkin as being rather mechanical and stiff. I think Morrison was more fluid, more explosive, and this would've eventually caused a dramatic turnaround in the fight and a sudden stoppage for Tommy.
Zolkin haven't heard that name in a very long time:think, anyway's from what i remember he was rather ordinary , slow, stiff, and wasn't much to brag about, that **** may work in Russia but not as well over here. Morrison was faster, more athletic, and would give Zolkin a boxing clinic, i see a UD for Morrison..
Yuri Vaulin was like Zolkin a pioneer for the old Soviet Union countries turning pro at Heavyweight. Although slightly smaller than Zolkin weight wise (eventually moving down to 190), Vaulin was of a similar level, height and a southpaw too. But when he fought the still developing Morrison, he was comprehensively thrashed. So I do not see Zolkin being too much of a challenge for prime Morrison. Alexander could box, but lacks the power to cause Morrison too many problems.
Vaulin did some good things against Tommy when they fought but kind of caved in to the body shots if I remember right.. Zolkin has a god chance in here especially due to being a southpaw.. would love to see this matchup
