Twas a good scrap, if a bit samey. Gvajava hurling lumpy 1-2 after 1-2 and Mtimkulu just leaning in to roll with them and tossing left hooks at the head and looping rights at the body.

 

Paul Kamanga vs. Mikheil Avakyan, 8 rounds @ welterweight

 

Kamanga is looking to rectify the ignominy of his last visit to Russia (his first venture outside South Africa) where he lost his zero to Aslanbek Kozaev. A light hitting Georgian who started his career at bantamweight, Avakyan is probably just what the doctor ordered.

 

Oh my. Guess I'm shot.

 

Loose tape on Avakyan's gloves delays the proceedings.

 

Round 1

Kamanga is juking and jiving, arms swinging loosely at his sides like guillotines as he loosens up, stalking Avekyan. Wide sloppy jab by Avekyan, circling away counterclockwise. Kamanga swoops in and drives an underhanded right into the gut. Avekyan wraps him up by the neck in a wild clinch. Scattershot punches up in the air by Avekyan, headhunting and missing. A few body shots by Kamanga. Lots of clinching. WILD lunging hook by Avekyan, stumbling off balance. Kamanga dances away from a reaching lead right, then circles back in, ducking some errant jabs sprayed out at random to peck at the body. Avekyan keeps throwing Kamanga into headlocks after his wild arm-punch misses with the wet-spaghetti left.

It'll be like the lollipop a pediatrician gives a kid for sitting through his check-up. "Good boy, Kamanga. You've started down the path toward rebuilding your confidence by pummeling someone that would probably get torn up by even your middling sparring partners in South Africa. "

 

Round 2

Kamanga is ducking under the wonky jabs and messy speared rights of Avekyan, trying his best to avoid getting caught in a headlock. To no avail. It keeps happening. In between, Kamanga is dinging Avekyan on the jawline and schnoz with leaping superman right hand straight leads and paddling his undercarriage with both hands. A few scything upward left hook leads from Kamanga, loaded up but skirting just past Avekyan's face. Kamanga just playing around in there.
