Apologies to those who already know this (probably a large number) but I was on Amazon earlier and my recommendations had a book by the guy who wrote "Hands Of Stone" in the coming soon section. It's a bio on Alexis Arguello called "Beloved Warrior" and I enjoyed the Duran book so I'm quite excited about this.I really am sorry if this is old news for most of you but I know how many of you appreciate Arguello the same way I do so I thought I'd mention this in case anyone didn't know. It claims to be answering some of the awkward questions that might be painful to read, but he was such a fine exponent that I'm sure his legend won't be blighted. I really am looking forward to reading this.Again,I apologise if this is old hat.
If this is a new Bio coming out, I was a big fan as a kid. El Flaco is the reason I follow boxing today. He's the first fighter I ever took to wanting not to miss a single one of his fights. When does the book come out?
Just says available for pre-order on Amazon.I know that's not a definitive answer, and the Roach book has been on hold for years, but hopefully it won't be too long.
I did not know about this. Thank you Im looking forward to it, "Hands of Stone" was indeed a great book and I like the author. Arguello is one of my favorite fighters
The first time I saw him was when he beat Jim Watt. One of those fighters who, when you get older and watch his career highlights, you actually can't help but admire him.One of the true greats.Seems to elicit a lot of warmth from fans.Hopefully he'll find a whole new generation of fans with the book. Hope it's not like the Freddie Roach book though, that's been on my "coming soon" list on Amazon for well over a year.Maybe more.
as a kid, i cried when pryor beat him, thats how serious a fan i was even as a kid. to me he epitomised the gentleman warrior. he didnt need to hype himself up to destroy another man, then afterwards he could show you as much love as he just showed you brutality. a truly noble warrior.
He really is one of those guys who I was just a bit young to appreciate but wish I had been able to follow him.A real fan's fighter.:good
I hope this book is'nt just a corny type of book that dwells on just Arguello's sportmanship and gentlman spirit. I want it to go further than that and goes well into what made Arguello the man and fighter. To show the human non-perfect side of him by the accounts of quotes from people who knew him well. Would love to here quotes from those closest to Arguello to see if we can get a better guage of what Arguello really thought of Aaron Pryor, and what happened in their fight with the black bottle. Before Arguello's death, we knew he had become close friends with Pryor. Arguello was just that type of an individual. I dont think he harbored ill feelings toward Pryor, but I have a hunch that Arguello was'nt stupid and really knew that what Pryor was up to that night was'nt on the up and up. Arguello must have confided in his closest friends about this, and I hope at least some of that comes out in the book. As a fan, it tears me up inside that Arguello died shortly before HBO's documentary "Assault in the ring" came out to the public. In that documentary Luis Resto admitted in detail of what Panama Lewis did with his fighters to cheat and gain an advantage. Arguello deserved to have known the exact truth as stated by facts as Resto laid out in that documentary on the matter. Sadly, Arguello went to his grave not knowing.:? I do hope the book touches in detail about the "black bottle incident."
Did you enjoy "Hands of Stone?" It's by the same guy.Check it out on Amazon. The product detail isn't bad.
Have'nt read it, but since its coming highly recommended in this thread, I'm going to check to see if my library carries it for me to borrow, otherwise I might buy the book myself.
Just to let anyone who's interested know,Amazon just emailed me to say my book has been dispatched so it must be out now. Thanks for looking.
