Duran said "I can't believe it. He was my friend. My brother."

Arguello was in great shape for a 57 year old man, but the actuality is that the body swells some in death.
.....I would think that it would exaggerate even more from the trauma of a gunshot wound.

I had seen the video of Arguello in the coffin.....just a personal thing with me, but I wish I did'nt have to run through that in a boxing thread.....I wish a link would have been posted to a picture like that instead.

Nothing against you for posting it Stonehands, but as an Arguello fan, it just hurts so much to look at it.

I was actually thinking of how he looked in PR late last month, not about what I saw in that coffin. (I'd like to think that was a wax figure, and not authentic human remains.)

I wonder what made him take his own life.

I can confirm that the fellow with the black shirt and shades on at Arguello's coffin is Roberto Duran.

I apologize if I offended you or anyone. I've loved the man since I was a boy -and followed him for decades now. For Catholics like me (and Duran), seeing the body helps us with goodbye. You're right, I should've posted a link.

    ....Picture is changed.

Nothing against posting a pic of the body in coffin. No desprespect imo, just seeing whats going on, and last good bys.

I mean there is footage of Babe Ruth in the coffin, open cast, and fans among fans saying there last respects. Seeing that footage right there is pretty amazing and touching at the same time, with that LONNNNNNG line saying good by.

    I have nothing against it.

Damn right that's Duran. That's what why I posted it. It's poignant.

These two were really opposite creatures:

Duran, the hot-blooded assassin. Arguello, the machine-like conquistador.

Duran, short and square. Arguello, tall and lean.

Duran, mean. He'd spit on his opponents. Alexis, nice. He'd help them up.

Alexis saw Duran circa 1978 in a lobby of a hotel and approached him with his hand extended. Duran practically slapped it away -"you *****!" Duran yelled, "why didn't you sign the contract?" Arguello was shocked --and there was no contract. Duran was moving up to face the welters at that time. I think that Duran, the passion fighter, had to hate his opponent to be at his best. Arguello's approach was different. For him it was a contest where respect and regard between men was enhanced. After all, who better than your opponent really understands what you're going through in a boxing match? Arguello understood this... Duran eventually came around.

When asked before Leonard-Duran III who would have won had they met as Lightweights, Arguello admitted that Duran would have beaten him. I think he's right... but Duran would have beaten Aaron Pryor too.

Arguello was a fan of Duran. In a big way. You can see him in the crowd at Duran-Leonard I with a tan trenchcoat. You can also see him in the crowd at the Hagler fight (it may have been the Moore fight... I'd have to check that)... he's the Nicarguan waving a little Panamanian flag!

And there they were together last week. Two polar opposites who had more in common than we thought... two Latin warriors, several titles, mutual respect.
