Think we need an Arguello discusion aint seen one in a while what was his 5 best wins/fights? How would you desribe his style? His strengths and Weaknesses? Why is he rated so highly? just encouraging debate here.
i'll stay out of this for now. if i start typing now the whole weekend will be a write-off :rofl :good
KO of Oliveras 2 ko's of Alfredo Escalera KO of Mancini 1st fight with Pryor a Classic KO of Billy Costello PowerPuncher, Tall with patience, methodical, high boxing IQ his stregths: Arguello was tall for a feather and lightweight, but what made Arguello special was his Power, one shot KO power and ring Intelligence. One and you were ruined you may get up but for all intent and purpose you wer a slab of jelly. Watch the Costello fight. Arguello was very methodical and would set up his opponnts beautifully. Economical with his shots each one with a purpose. Arguello calmly and patiently would feel out his opponents and decide on the appropriate course of action. He would stalk his opponents, economically landing his heavy shots until boom he lowered that right usually guys were out or their legs turned to jelly. The man was a true gentleman and a credit to the Sport one of the real good guys of Boxing. Arguello's weakness was his poor footspeed and slow lateral movement. he wasnt the fastest guy around either but he was so smart and knew how to move around to maximize those gifts he did posses. Dominated during two deades of boxing at the elite level and won Championships in Multiple divisions. One of the greatest KO artists of the lower weights.
yes good body puncher.....we grew up on Sunday afternoons for free on CBS when boxing was on the networks my father brother and Uncles being thrilled by this guy he was an idol for us all. I felt his death more than any other last month. Alexis Arguello..... I will tell you how much we loved this guy... I was going to name my son Alexis Duran in honor of these great latin Warriors Roberto and Arguello!
this is not really what you are asking but this sums things up for me.i was talking to my dad on the phone a while ago and we were talking about pac-man and my dad said he may be good but he`s no arguello , i know they fight a different way but i have to agree with the old fella from feather to lightweight arguello beats pac for me and many say pac is P4P the best now.as i say for me thats how good he was just my opinion
im abit young to have seen Alexis live so i watched lot of tapes of him and i was a huge fan as the avater shows. I was really saddend by his death. I love Arguello and i think he beats Pac but id rank Pac ahead of him
Is it the more weights that Pac has fought at? I would still say Arguello has a better resume at the moment, but can be surpassed. For me, the reason Alexis would beat Pac is simple; his left hook/uppercut to the body. Imagine this coming underneath Pac's southpaw jab; it would crush him badly. If that didn't do the trick, followed up by the lead right; I honestly think Pac would win the first six, seven, eight rounds with lateral movement and punches in bunches; but once Alexis timed him it would be lights out, especially at 126 and 130. I would say it gets closer as Arguello gets heavier and Pac retains his speed.
Its the unprecedented way Pac has had linear titles in about 5 weifghts from Fly to LWW which is phenomenal I agree completly with your anaylisis of teh fight
I see what you're saying; I myself just think Alexis has better wins in total. However, Pac's beating of Barrera is probably the best single win out of the two fighters.
yeh Arguello has the better wins but Pac has that win at flyweight vs Sasakul which i rate highly taking it into context but not as good as Arguellos wins over all. Like i said its more what Pacquiao has achieved which is a first hes a modern day Henry Armstrong
I must say this is hyperbole. I know you;re aware of how many people Armstrong fought in his day and the quality of opposition he faced in just a few years. Also, he usually weighed 126lbs when facing much bigger men. I have Pac just outside my top 20. But I don't think he's on that level. I see what you're saying but I would just go for quality of opposition. Otherwise Guillermo Jones (from welter to Cruiser and holds an 'ABC' strap) would be in the top 10 P4P. Of course, Pac's resume is also very good so I'm certainly NOT FLAMING YOU :good You're entitled to your opinion and you always back it up well, so respect
