http://assets.espn.go.com/boxing/columns/graham/612133.html Sad story, which foreshadowed his death. Arguello was such a great fighter and sportsman, and a tragic figure. Seemed like the only time he was content was in the ring and gym.
Arguello was always one of my favorite fighters. He had great skills and a great heart. The Pryor fight was hard for me because I liked both fighters and didn't want to see either lose. I'm still kind of mad at Pryor for cheating.
Shame he couldn't see his protégé rise up to fulfill his potential and become a top 5 p4p boxer int he world. Román González was already 2-0 in world title bouts when Argüello passed, but had only just begun to make a dent. In fact, his first really big W came just a fortnight later. :verysad The protégé of his protégé is also coming into his own, and in just over an hour is taking a third stab at nabbing a strawweight title.
Never get into politics in a 3rd world country. Sad part is that the Sandinista party that Gonzales loves so much killed Alexis.
I am not sure if Willie meant they literally killed him, but if Alexis did take his own life, his political party were a large factor in it.
According to Arguello's son who traveled to Nigaragua from the US for his Dad's funeral, he wanted to exhume Arguello's body and conduct a private autopsy but the Nicaraguan government didn't let him. I think there's a good chance Alexis Arguello was murdered.
No they killed him. My wife is from Nicaragua and her friend is Alexis daughter. The Sandinista's were also involved with Oliver North, Reagan and the whole contra, drug cartel. Arguello killed himself the same way Princess Diana's driver was drunk and crashed.
