Jones should be top 10 AT LEAST
Arguello get the edge over Hearns b/c his competition was stiffer, and WON

Hearns was faster, but AA more durable and a better 15 round fighter no doubt

I always thought Hearns had the better competition by far. Look at the list of just Cuevas,Benitez, Leonard (2 x), Hagler, Duran,Hill. Barkley and the list goes on.. The first 6 there are in the hall of fame. He won 3 of his titles against Cuevas, Benitez and Virgil Hill.

    Hill was decent but Barkley?

AA fought everyone there was and even Pryor going back to 1974 with an impressive number of defenses, taking apart bigger, younger, stronger opponents. His best weight probably 130

In posts like this. I tend to give a five fighter spread to give context to my picks. I now understand that if I include a controversial one such as Jones, I should expect some abuse. Fair play. But 30 is where I rate him. I have no problem with him being rated much higher by those who know more about him (redrooster). Fair play to you. Another thread, another time :)

Jones number 30? Sh*t NO WAY!!

The man devoured top middleweights on his way up, and decimated everyone else all the way up to 175

and just about everyone acknowledges his p4p status between 1994 all the way to 2002

What DIDNT he have going for him?

    Give the man his due

Roy? Lacks great fights and great opponents.. He did not have that Marvin Hagler drive to be great. He didn't fight everyone like Hearns and Leonard and Duran did. He ducked.. he had the talent but not the great fights to make him top 10.. He avoided many guys like Maske and Benn and McClleland and Eubank at 168, and fought guys like Hall at 175.. People forget how he ducked a lot of guys. Jones is not top 10.. He could have been, but he didn't want the tough competition and wins over those guys to be there. I think 30 is being generous.

Hearns....Arguello had dominance in every weight until he met Pryor but he was the same style every time but Hearns was greater overall by the time his career ended TH had accomplished more against better fighters

    Bump.
Hard to pick. Arguello is my absolute favorite and think he was one of the best in his generation but I think Hearns has the advantage with wins over Duran (the same guy that beat Arguello’s conquerors Marcel and Fernandez) and Benitez.

Pretty sure he got his biggest payday vs. Hearns.

Hill was fighting most of his title defenses in his hometown, making good but not great money, and couldn’t break through without facing a major name opponent. Hearns was the best available. Thomas outboxed him in a competitive fight … big deal.

It’s not like skipping Hearns and fighting the standard contenders on his home turf, maybe getting an afternoon weekend date on ABC every so often, was going to elevate him.

Seems like we shoud applaud guys who want to fight good competition.

Neither answer would be wrong if we look at there resumes- I don’t know much, just having a look. I do think Arguello was near as good as it gets though- if you’re a tall skinny guy Arguello is the best you could hope to be.
