Does anyone know why Arguello retired after knocking out Billy Costello. Costello had just lost his world title to Lonnie Smith, and had to still be ranked high in the 140lb division. Arguello ko's him and then retires again for a decade before another brief comeback. I'm thinking with the win over Costello he probably could have gotten a title fight?
1) Costello (who also retired after that fight) pretty much dominated Alexis and worked him over for the first three rounds. Then Arguello landed a big right and swarmed him to earn the stoppage. But he did not look good up to that point. 2) Per @scartissue doctor’s detected a heart murmur soon after in examining Arguello, prompting his retirement. So health issues.
Arguello would later return to face a journeyman with the nickname Pink Cat (to continue the idea of the other thread), and lost a decision.
Forever answering the question of who would win in a fight between a pink cat and a thin, explosive man.
There was no good reason for Arguello to return to the ring after the second Pryor fight. In that one, we saw that what was left of his prime had been taken by Pryor in the first fight. In the Costello fight, we saw he had nothing left but his power and in the Walker fight, we saw he had nothing left at all.
