Alexis Arguello rated 8th best fighter in the last 50 years

Personally I like Arguello over Chavez head to head prime vs prime. Arguello had problems with fighters that were movers, not fighters who would be in the pocket with him. It would be a war , but I see Arguello's power, great chin, and punishing jab, being the difference in a hypothetical fight with Chavez, esp over the 15rd limit. I have no problem with him being picked that high, but I don't necessarily agree with it. I'd say top 15 the last 50yrs easily.

 

Arguello was still very much improving of course too.

 

Since the first page of the thread sidetracked into a discussion of Olivares' genius, how impressive is it that Rafael Herrera scored a stoppage and decision win over Olivares. Throw in that Herrera split a two fight series with fellow bantamweight champ Chucho Castillo as well as his victory over the hard hitting future king Rudolfo Martinez and that's a strong resume.

 

One thing me dad (Alan Rudkin) said about Ruben was that he was a master of range. He was a lot more than just a puncher.

 

Very true! Zarate said about Martinez that he was one of the best he fought.

 

You need to watch way way way more film befor you come to these conclusions

Alfredo "Snakeman" Escalera is a very underrated Super FW Champion who Arquello beat twice in bloody shootouts for the title. I would make The Snakeman a live 'shot' against most of all the SuperFW Champs, but not necessarily the favorite.

 

As Edwin fell more and more in love with his power, and forgot his boxing, he became more and more adept at blocking punches with his chin and the sides of his head.
