I will never forget how Arguello put his arm around a young, very game, but outmatched Ray Mancini. after defeating him in a tough fight. Telling Ray " You will be a Champion someday". A true class act. Rare in a Boxing ring.

:thumbsup This is a moment that sticks with me too. Aside from being a singularly gifted fighter Arguello was also an uncommonly decent human being as evidenced by his life post-boxing. The political arena is a volatile one at the best of times, especially in a country such as Nicaragua. People of AA's ilk are far too rare in this world.

    RIP champ.

If there's one practical thing which he put to use in his life that we might consider learning to apply in our own daily lives, it's a tidbit of information that was revealed in the April 26, 1982 issue of SI, where in paragraph seven of the following page it is mentioned that Alexis was reared in part on the Dale Carnegie classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People (Consider how many jerks have become prominent in boxing, and how their image and public acceptance might be greatly enhanced by following Carnegie's principles):

    http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1125459/5/index.htm

His manager, Dr. Eduardo Roman, belongs in the IBHOF for what he did for Alexis. Of course the only honor Arguello has missed out on is being elected and serving as President of Nicaragua.

That's undeniably true; I suppose Carnegie makes for interesting reading whether one agree's with him or not.

On a different note, can anyone shed any light as to why Alexis joined the Sandinista party after initially opposing them?

That was the man. I remember him after the second Pryor, he was obviously gutted but he put his arm around Aaron and said "Pryor my good friend" or words to that effect, it's been a long time. It brought a lump to my throat to see such a great man so humble, I'll never forget it.
