Alexis Arguello - The Rise and Fall of a Legend

My favorite fighter

 

He was detained by the Police in my hometown for doing roadwork in 1980.

 

After I learned that it is more fun to watch Little Red Lopez fight than it is to try and fight like him- I was about 12- I found new role models. One of them was Alexis Arguello and I spent at least twice as much time hitting the heavy bag and pretending to be Arguello than I did pretending to be Carlos Palomino.
I was in a gym in south Texas hitting the heavy bag shortly after my 51st birthday and one of the guys older than me said "he looks like Arguello when he punches."
I nearly wept.

 

You couldn't pick a better fighter to emulate. Between Arguello and Louis , Technical perfection with their punches and punch selection.

 

Flash----hate u. Exactly what I was thinking. Long time ago I watched many bouts with Louis. Loved how patient, and controlled. I saw the same in AA. When you watch both of them you see such ring savy and discipline. Julio Chavez comes close to mind. have to run ...more to say

 

My coach used to ask me every time I came into the gym "Who you been watchin?" I said Arguello once, he paused and told me we have the same creepy moustache and that's about it. lol

 

For the sole purpose of securing an autograph?

 

He sure cleaned out the 130 lb division at a time when it was deep with top notch competition. Seldom see that through the years.

And he sure put together one heckuva title defense run before that loss to Pryor. And what a treat we the boxing fans got---Arguello vs Pryor.

As for Arguello, everything has already been said. A legend.

Loved Alexis when I was growing up. Aside from being a superb technician, he was a true gentleman. I'd like to see more true gentlemen in the sport these days.

 

Bro, love you. I've said for years Louis and Arguello offensively were just about perfect.
