This is a little late but I had to remind people of the great Alexis Arguello - In my country, Nicaragua, Alexis Arguello is the biggest star to have ever laced up the gloves and stepped into the ring. Alexis fought at a time when Nicaragua had just experienced a terrible earthquake which destroyed one of the most developed capitals in Central America at the time, Managua, and claimed the lives of over 10,000 people. Alexis also fought at the wake of the Sandinista revolution, which ended a 40 year old dictatorship, and the wake of the Contra supported war against the new Sandinista government. Thousands of lives were lost and the country was driven to become one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. Nicaraguans needed a hero. Nicaraguans needed someone to make them believe that Nicaraguans were going to battle through adversity. That hero was the legendery and Hall of Famer Alexis Arguello. Alexis was gifted, humble and had great class. He dominated several divisions and became a three division champion. Through his passing this past summer, Nicaraguans as well as boxing fans all over the world were shocked to hear of his passing. Alexis had just been elected mayor of Managua and promised great things for the future. RIP Alexis....you will remembered for all the great things you did.
great fighter even better human being, a true ATG! how was it recieved in Nicarague and where there any suspicions about the cause of death?
I heard a rumor that back in the early 80's, a USC running back went to spar with Arguello. The guy was at least 190 pounds. Arguello put him on ***** street. Any truth to this? Los Angeles fight fans could possibly know.
I didn't really know Arguello's greatness until he died. I've watched alot of Arguello fights since then and i am dumbfounded. All I can say is WOW. What a legend.
