Chavez was a FW? He must've been a twig down there (not that Arguello was much meatier I suppose).

Is that what he weighed when he lost for the 1st time, only for the result to mysterious disappear from later records?

    Anyway, gimme Arguello on points.

This is imo Arguello’s best weight, but Julio was a force of nature and I think he takes a decision after one helluva 15-round scrap.

Every weight division above this up to 140, I lean more heavily toward JC Superstar and figure stoppage comes into play at 140 if not 135 … too strong.

I thought Bobby Chacon gave Alexis fits in their fight even though Arguello won on a cut — probably Arguello would have prevailed but some of what I saw in Bobby’s hand speed and willingness to keep pressing really makes me think Julio would be the better bet at 130.

Arguello for mine Chávez was not yet the force he’d become.

I could swear the thread title simply said "FW" when I first clicked on it ... I think someone pulled a bait & switch on me.

Either way, I still like Arguello @ 130 - I think he was at the peak of his powers @ that weight, whereas Chavez wasn't yet at full strength (i.e. see his fights w/ Lockridge & LaPorte).

At super feather, Chavez won his first world title and defended it multiple times.

The title of this thread originally just said "FW" rather than "super FW" (or at least, that's what I thought I read).

Against Mario Martinez no less. Great fighter he already looked like an old man aged 19-20.

I grew up watching Arguello and I liked him, but there are some that I definitely rank over him, Chavez definitely being one.
Duran, Chavez, Whitaker all would have beaten him. Even De La Hoya would have taken him.

I thought Arguello was a step down from all of them.

At super featherweight and lightweight, I like Arguello by Ud if the fights 15rds.
Arguello's Achilles were great movers like Fernandez, who was otherwise very ordinary.
But his strength, the ability to keep Arguello resetting and turning got him the victory over him in an upset .
Chavez was a whole world better fighter than Fernandez......
But he wasn't a better mover, and ironically he wouldn't have the issues Arguello had with him.
I can see Chavez taking the early rds against Arguello. But as the the fight progressed he'd become reluctant to let his hands go.
Arguello power and precision would be the reason why.
If Arguello can hit Chavez consistently and cleanly enough he'd make him more defensive minded.
Some thought Lockridge beat Chavez at ( I didn't, but it was close) super featherweight.
Lockridge consistently controlled the middle of the ring, he made Chavez practically abandon his usual consistent pressure style , to more of a defensive tactic.
Imagine Arguello with his height and reach advantages, and much better power in Lockridge's place.
It adds up to a late surge win for Arguello. In 12 rds , he gets a split decision if the fights not in Mexico, in a 15rd fight, a UD, just maybe a late stoppage.

Mancini was not Chavez, and he gave Arguello a struggle. So did Jose Luis Ramirez and he was not Chavez either. Some think he beat Arguello. People seem to forget these things.

You don't "outtough" Chavez. Maybe only Duran and a couple of others throughout history may have been able to do that. You have to outbox Chavez with speed and movement, not an easy task even for the best boxers. Arguello does not have that ability. He would be right there for Julio and that's a battle I favor Chavez in.

    Chavez by stoppage.

WOW!! Man I would cough up some MAJOR cash to see this one! I'd give the slightest edge to Chavez in a war for the ages!!
