I'd take Hamed to stop McGugian, but at least Barry has a very good chance in that matchup.

    He has none against AA.

I can quote other times he simultaneously said " its unfair to say who'd have won but I'd have put more pressure on him than anyone ever has" to post barerra saying flat out he'd have repeated what barrera did.

You sure threw in a plethora of McGuigian excuses in this paragraph.

Cruz probably doesn't beat a 100% McGugian, but here's another reality... McGugian never wins the title in the first place if Pedroza was 4 years younger.

maybe, but heres another to throw in. He moves up and fights Gomez, which he had the chance to and for the life of me i cannot understand why they didnt take it, and doesnt face late substitute cruz. That, imo, was a very winnable fight at both fighters career junctions

    Interesting points.

Respectfully i wouldn't call them excuses in McGuigans case. The death of his father, the near death of his baby girl for all intents and purposes ended his career very prematurely.

He"d fought Cruz having just found out his dad had cancer.Eastwood was a toxic bookmaker who knew nothing about boxing.

Cruz was no joke .As you say he was v capable for a few years .he pushed esparragozza another capable guy.

Id agree with u on a 1981 pedroza.

Barrera stood off and countered Hamed, he was very wary of Hamed`s power, he simply let Hamed punch himself off balance by over committing with shots that wasn`t Barry`s style, he would get hit far more than Barrera did v Hamed.

For once I agree with Mark, and he's correct.

MAB totally revamped his style to beat Hamed. It's a wrinkle that McGuigan never showed. He was never as good a counterpuncher as Barrera.

One thing that McGuigan DID have that would bother Naz was a stiff, consistent jab. But i don't think he was good enough a complete technician to duplicate what MAB did

@mark ant and @Xplosive yes the evidence you present has convinced me there simply isnt the evidence McGuigan could replicate the mab plan.

just a point id like to pick up on. Eastwood knew his boxing. He wasnt just a money man who used boxing as a sideline. He knew it well. Had a few cracking stables over the years, had trainers who knew their onions in eddie shaw, paul mc cullough then john breen. Always had top sparring partners for his fighters. A friend of mine turned pro with him back in the day and he had him flew over to panama and stayed with carlos eleta, trained with duran, had him in the states too, along with paul hodkinson, sparring Espargoza and others

Yes..he had good unprecedented links to latin american fighters for a british promoter at the time...and did a good job with mcauley...i just feel he interfered in dictating how fighters fought a bit too much

Unlike Mark Ant I actually followed McGuigan's career.
I'll say it again because I think alot of people posting didnt.
First off do I think Alexis wins. Yes do I know how. No.
McGuigan was a very fundamentally sound boxer puncher. He had unusually long arms with a nice hard jab. His feet were small so he worked extra hard on his balance. Along with having excellent balance he had superb footwork using short steps in all directions. Cut the ring off nicely. Defensive sound with nice upperbody/head movement as well as bending at the knees which he also used to his advantage defensively. Big power in his hook up and downstairs. Wasnt looking for the big one punch KO but opted to break you down.
A very well schooled fighter far far from the one dimensional slugger Mark Ant insists on having you believe even though he only saw him 1 time.

McGuigan was no slugger and a good combo puncher but Arguello`s combo`s were better.
