I just watched the fight between Alexis Arguello and Bill Costello. Of course, Alexis made a comeback and despite losing the opening first few rounds, he landed a devastating right hand on the chin of Costello which sent him to the canvas. He did well to get up, but after a barrage of punches to body and head, the referee waved the fight off and it was declared a TKO victory in favor of Alexis Arguello. In the post-fight interview, Alexis spoke of "what happened in the dressing room". It seemed to put him off, and he'd soon elaborate on how he was accused of wearing illegal handwraps and was made to rewrap his hands. This has happened a few times that I can remember. Trinidad ahead of his fight with Hopkins, and Roach claims that Barrera was trying to wear illegal wraps ahead of the Pacquiao fight. Alexix would go on to knock his man out, but both Barrera and Trinidad suffered losses. Do you think action like these are designed to get in the head of the opponent?
yeh definitly they can get in your head. but i think Arguello would feel quite affronted at being accused of cheating
I saw the fight live on CBS television.....and saw the whole controversy with the handwraps described by Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy (I miss those guys)........ A Costello representative did'nt like how Arguello had wrapped his hands and made a big stink about it in the dressing room........ ......for some reason, Arguello was made to take his wraps off and rewrap..... Arguello was always a cool cucumber in the ring, so it was designed by the Costello camp to **** Arguello off and have him fighting mad. It worked because for the first 3 rounds, Arguello out of character was headhunting looking to land one big punch while Costello was outboxing him..... Arguello finally settled down some in the fourth and started attacking Costello's body in combination, and setting his shots up with the jab........just like that, Arguello set up Costello to land that big right that sent him crashing...... You just saw the fight Addie, and you must have seen Arguello afterward make a fist with both hands and stretching his elbows back as if to say, "Take that, and making a facial gesture as if to say to the Costello team, "how dare you question my integrity!" ......thats as mad before or after a fight as I've ever seen Arguello, (who was always percieved as a gentleman and true professional) get and be in the ring. In the ring interview afterward Arguello explained why he had been so pissed and dissapointed that they would dare make him re-wrap for no good reason..... ....Arguello who always carefully and meticulously wrapped his own hands said something to the effect, "I've been boxing for 18 years, I know how to wrap my hands, and I would never do anything illegal with intent to harm anyone." .....but when they asked Arguello to describe what had just occured in the ring in him stopping Billy Costello, Arguello was back to his gentleman like manner, (it was just his nature)....about the fight Arguello explained, "Billy was doing a great job, but I saw the opening and I conquered it."......explaining but always giving his opponent his props as well! Dammit, thinking about it now both brings a smile to my face and saddens me......what a fighter he was!
