On the other hand Buddy was stopped by the light hitting Meldrick Taylor. Arguello was slower but he had timing and a complete arsenal. He was also the taller man. He wouldn't need to land like Taylor because Alexis still had power at 140.
That was the worst McGirt ever looked in any fight in his career. I have no explanation for it. He came out for the second round, after a good first, looking like he’d already gone 10. Now, he did show some stamina issues in other fights, but I wouldn’t call it a major flaw in his game. Nothing like he showed in this one. It was like they slipped Xanax in his water. I’ve heard about him going in with a ruptured ear drum and whatnot, but nothing that really explained that type of showing. I don’t even think Taylor was a better fighter, much less to the degree that fight seemed to showcase. I also think that’s the one major stain in McGirt’s career and the one that keeps him relegated to the second tier, filed away with the “other guys”. He was much better than that, in my opinion.
True. One had wrecking balls in his gloves and the other had the force of a fly. Not even a horse fly. Just your standard fly.
Well, by that logic McGirt should’ve been KO’d by just about everybody he faced. Every big puncher, anyway. He had no business moving up in weight several years after the Taylor loss. Not to put on a clinic against a more powerful puncher than any of the other names mentioned in this thread. But he did. Simon Brown was only the 3 year reigning champion making his 9th defense of the IBF Welterweight title at the time, so no biggie. Thought I’d mention it, though.
Good observation M. Mcgirt was more a flat footed counter puncher/ brawler , he was awkward, but he wasn't fleet of foot, as some here seem to think. His foot speed wasn't comparable to Fernandez or Pryor. This means Arguello wouldn't have to over extend very much as he did with Fernandez. Mcgirt would be in the line of fire much more than him , and he wouldn't have to worry as much about what's coming back at him as with Pryor, he wasn't close to him in the power department. This spells eventual ko loss for Mcgirt. Because sooner or later Mcgirts tendency to counter, but wait around for the recipe would cost him against a dynamic puncher like Arguello. Arguello starts finding the range after 6-7 rds, and he probably would be behind in the score cards. But the constant and viscous body punching would be taking its toll. Setting up the eventual ko win for Arguello between 9- 12 rds.
Good points. ETM had a precision though that most didn't have. Brown was an excellent champion i agree but Alexis had an uncommon arsenal as well as timing. He was basically imv a mini Joe Louis. His opponent can't afford many mistakes. He could torture the body as well as the head. I don't see Buddy surviving the distance.
