I'm not sure if this match-up has already been discussed, but how you suppose a Lightweight showdown between Alexis Arguello & Juan Manuel Marquez would have progressed? I would probably favour it to end inside schedule given how both combatants sport varied offensive arsenals in addition to defensive frailties, but I think they match up fairly well. Two durable, hard-hitting, technicians a little past their best. 12 rounds.

    Thoughts? :think

Would be great as long as it lasted, but Arguello would eventually punch holes in him.

Marquez has always surprised me by his ability to get up from a bad knockdown and fight his way through the storm.

There would be no such surprises in this fight. Arguello by KO.

I agree. How do you see the fight going? Is it a two-way, action packed affair until one punch changes the entire complexion of the fight, or is it domination from the opening bell?

I watched Arguello's fight with Jim Watt the other day, and as impressive as he was on the offensive, Alexis was certainly there to be hit, even by a cautious, terrified Jim Watt. I could see JMM having a lot of success early with his combinations, perhaps even scoring a flash knockdown in the process, but he'd probably fall under the weight of Alexis' shots sooner or later. The guy could really hit.

How impressed are you by JMM's Lightweight reign, P?

JMM is often referred to a poor man's Arguello, but he does have a few advantages over him. He's a fair bit quicker of both hand and foot for 1 thing. I don't think Arguello is keeping JMM down either, plenty have put JMM down, no one has kept him down, few comeback better from KDs than JMM. Arguello has the range on and is a bigger stronger puncher from every range pretty much, but JMM is the faster more accurate puncher in my view

    I'd make JMM a favourite at 126 and have it a close 50-50 at 130 and 135

JMM certainly has quicker feet, but I don't see a huge or notable distinction in their hand-speed. In fact, Alexis is underrated in this area for my money. He throws relatively fast in combination. Likewise, I'm not sure JMM has been in a ring with anyone who hit like Arguello. I think he hit harder than Manny Pacquiao at 126-130, and although some may doubt his power at 140lbs after the Pryor fights, I'd still favour him to do a demolition job on the likes of Hatton at that weight, just as Manny did. Pryor was a different animal.

JMM has quicker leads, jabs and counters though, which mean's he should be landing first when in range, I think there's quite a clear distinction in handspeed. I think Manny probably does hit as hard as Arguello, its a close call, JMM is an underrated puncher in his own right though

Yes Arguello knocks Hatton out, although in some ways Hatton has similarities to Pryor (don't shoot me).

JMM would have owned Hatton himself, not in 2 rounds but he would have countered him silly before eventually knocking him out

When in range, perhaps, but Alexis will be bringing a sizeable advantage into this fight in terms of height and reach. JMM is there to be hit, the likes of Juan Diaz and Michael Katsidis were teeing off, and neither of those two possess the quality or craft of an Arguello. I agree with Popkins, it's going to be a fun fight for as long as it lasts, but I can't see Arguello not landing regularly, and I don't think the likes of JMM has the chin to withstand consecutive power shots from a sharp, destructive puncher like Arguello for 12 rounds. It will eventually tell.

I think Arguello would stop Marquez late. It'd be a good fight but eventually the difference in class would show, with Arguello pulling ahead.

Both men have firepower, Arguello has more. Both men are durable, Arguello moreso. Arguello wins by KO at any weight.

Marquez feet are slow, who cares if they are marginally quicker than Arguello's.Footspeed is not going to be a factor for either of them. imo Arguello punches better and with greater balance when coming forward and turning, even though his legs are stiffer looking.

  14. MeThinks Arguello stops him late , marquez is always 1 curagous champ , but it wud be his end,
Arguello prob just hits 2 hard, n Arguello prob lands 2 many consequtive ,
    shots imo .

Marquez versus a harder punching, taller and smarter version of himself.
