Alexis Arguello vs Julio Caesar Chavez at 130 lbs, 15 rounds, both peak. Alexis won the WBC Junior Lightweight Title from Alfredo Escalera on January 28 1978, TKO 13. Julio Caesar Chavez won the WBC Junior Lightweight Title vacated by Hector Macho Camacho on Sept 13 1984 with a TKO 8 over Mario Martinez. Who wins this battle of legendary champions? And why?

Alexis has unreal power, but Chavez has iron in his jaw.

This would be an incredible chess match, as both were uncanny accurate with their shots. Chavez has a good defense so he can bore his way inside. Chavez's inside game and body shots would change this bout. Once Arguello has to back up, he loses the best advantage he has - Power and distance. Chavez is a relentless machine, and has an excellent right hand counter- which would to come right after Arguello throws his. Then Chavez will get inside and start landing those power body shots slowing Arguello even further . Eventually Alexis wiill take a knee or the corner throws in the towell.

Alexis will spin his head with his power, but cannot throw enough combos with enough speed to stop JC.

JC Chavez pulls this out in an epic clash. KO 11

Wow! What a matchup! I would have to give the edge to Chavez. Alexis will be there for him so I think Chavez will wear him down especially to the body. Alexis has great power but Chavez has that unreal chin. Although, I would be rooting for Arguello but believe Chavez takes it - 13th round TKO.

I think after Chavez eats that wicked Arguello right hand his attack will slow and Alexis takes a UD.

Arguello is really accurate and every round starts on the outside.
By mid rounds Chavez won't be as excited about working his way inside

Would be a thriller just like 'The Explosive Thin Man's first fight with Aaron Pryor.
I agree with Reinhardt's verdict on the result, though, and the rationale.

Never quite rated Chavez at 130 lb as highly as others. For me he wasn't at his best at Super-Featherweight, whereas Arguello peaked there. I think Chavez at 130 was a bit tight at the weight which accounted for him being a little easier to push back or move around there. Laporte could easily have beaten him with a different set of judges and the Lockridge performance wasn't one of his greatest, either.

On the other hand, Arguello's killer instinct, resilience and strength all reached their zenith at 130. He had to come from behind late on against a fading Olivares at Featherweight, and dropped a decision to Fernandez, let Watt off the hook and got floored by Ganigan at Lightweight. But at Super-Feather he was incredibly dominant and at his very best. Won his title in a grueller against Escalera who he'd go on to beat again, and look at the next four men who went on to hold that WBC belt after he vacated it: Limon, Boza-Edwards, Navarette and Chacon. He beat all four of them inside-schedule during his reign, albeit in non-title circumstances for Boza.

Two guys who are close in overall greatness, but I think a head-to-head outcome rests heavily on the weight, and at 130 I think Arguello was just the better and more comfortable fighter. Might seem outrageous to some, but I don't totally rule out the possibility that he stops Chavez in closing stages of a fifteen-rounder. But that'd be my minority and slightly fanciful take, I guess. Overall I'd still take Arguello to win a very hard-fought decision, with Julio bloodied, but unbowed at the final bell. I think he'd have to bring Arguello up to 135 or 140 to get his revenge.

Chavez s chin wins him the fight. He has to take a lot of hurtful shots, but keeps on coming. Chavez, the machine by ko 11.

Arguello clean UD. Scores a knock down or 2.
Arguello too underrated on here. Chavez has nothing for Arguello.
