I've been watching a lot of Alexis Arguello recently, and I think he was certainly one of the few who moved up the divisions and maintained his punching power. There was no shame in landing those shots on Aaron Pryor and not scoring a knockout, he was simply up against a granite jaw and talented offensive force that night. Prior to that, he destroyed Rooney with a single shot, who had only previously lost the once to Davey Moore on cuts. It was a devastating knockout at 140lbs by a former Featherweight. Seeing as though Manny Pacquiao dealt with Cotto the way he did at Welterweight, how do you suppose Arguello would have done if he operated against some of the more recent fighters around that class? My personal opinion is, and this was my feeling before the Manny fight, is that Arguello would have decimated Hatton. He's never really shown the ability to take shots from an Arguello, who had that counter left hook which you'd imagine Hatton would be walking into often. Hatton comes forward face first, and that's not how you want to fight Alexis. How about moving up to the 147lbs division and facing Miguel Cotto?
I like Miguel Cotto, I think he's a class act as well as a fine fighter who can hold his head up high with pride even after his only two career defeats, but Alexis Arguello would have done worse to him than Margarito did and of course all without any cheating or funny handwraps. Arguello ko 9 Cotto.
Arguello could break a man down. It would be a war, I think, but Alexis's pressure and power would eventually prevail, especially if we're talking fifteen rounds. Arguello would flatten Hatton inside six. If not a left hook, a straight right like Arguello tagged Pryor with. Hatton doesn't stay upright after taking one of those bombs. Pryor himself said he was seeing stars after that punch, and to get the Hawk's attention took real power.
Arguello is just on a different plane from Cotto, even with the weight difference at WW. As good a survivor as Cotto is, I don't see him making it out of a round where Arguello hurt him, which would obviously happen sooner or later.
Arguello by late KO, maybe Cotto takes a lead early but starts to get broke down. The only uncertainty is the 147lb weight, Cotto is big and strong at the weight, I think Arguello would be too but its an unknown
Depends on how Arguello handles the weight. If he can carry his power and attributes up that high, he should pulverise Cotto. I'd favor him to do so at 140 conclusively.
Considering Cotto's punch resistance at 140lbs, I think he's get lit up early against Arguello at that weight. I thought Alexis looked damn good against Rooney and Pryor. He would have beaten a lot of Junior Welterweights.
I dont think Cotto could handle the power punches of Arguello. Cotto doesnt have enough to hold off Alexis imo so late TKO (9).
Depends how Arguello handles the weight. Cotto, let's not forget, is durable, and as long as he's moving he's causing Alexi trouble, especially if he steps in with shots and lands combos to the body. Thing is, if Cotto doesn't get Arguello out of there, he's gonna' be fading (as he always doesw) against a man who punches hard late. I wouldn't be surprised to see Arguello flatten Cotto whilst behind on points in around ten.
Pre-Margarito Cotto? I think he might be able to dig out a close decision win. But probably not. Arguello by late stoppage.
I don't think Cotto was all that durable, mate. A durable fighter to me is someone who takes shots, can get hurt, but is still in the fight afterwards. Cotto was in survival mode against Margarito and Pacquiao, he wasn't demonstrating durability. Arguello would have devastated Miguel with his pin point shots in my judgment, but I think Cotto will do very well early on and may even score a knockdown. He'll fade though, Alexis generally got stronger as the rounds went on.
