Alexis Arguello .VS. Oscar De La Hoya @ 135.

Arguello by decision in a 12 rounder, or TKO in a 15 rounder. DLH never had the stamina to hang with Arguello.

 

Arguello, I like De la Hoya but Arguello is too precise and accurate. A 135 De la Hoya even reminded me of Arguello in some ways. Alexis by UD but I wouldn't rule out a stoppage at 12 or 15 rounds. Oscar's chin wasn't as good as it became when at 135 and was buzzed a few times by people who were not in Arguello's league.

 

Delahoya is probably too much pre-prime here hence probably gets taken out late maybe after building up a lead. A nearer prime DLH at 140 beats Arguello, similar to the way he should have beat Tito, too much speed and mvoement for him

Arguello may stop him, i dont want to underrate the young DeLaHoya's chin or durability. But Arguello is a top level animal when he gets going, so strong at the weight, technical powershots are upstairs, downstairs. I think he'll stop him late.

 

Arguello would lacerate Mr. Pretty before winning a tko after 2 knockdowns in round 12 or 13 (a magic round for Arguello). I recognize Oscar's quality and worth but Alexis Arguello was superior, plus a veteran of the old 15 round days, not that he went the full 15 that often, he nonetheless was accustomed to being in the "deep waters" of rounds 13 and 14, and that would have made a difference against Oscar, who wasn't.

 

I am not sure that Arguello would stop him in a 12 rd fight. I would say his chances go up with fight duration, but lean away from him stopping DLH even at 15. Arguello has better chances IMO than Chavez (another thread) in winning this one, and he gets my pick. I know people question DLH's endurance but don't believe that would have been a problem for him especially at 135. DLH is probably a little young to deal with Arguello at his best weight. If this takes place at later pts of weight and their carears DLH's chances would go up. I'll take an Arguello decision, but he would leave with respect for the golden boy as well.

 

I believe Arguello's best weight was 130. He'd be even younger then and would definitely get stopped (IMO)

 

i really think he may stop him, not saying its a lock, but anyway i would never pick DLH to win though.

 

I will go against the grain here and say that the Rivera trained De La Hoya who fought Genaro Hernandez would pull this fight out.

I can see a gameplan being use that would neutralize Alexis' right hand, with upper waist movement and footwork. The main counter would of course be Oscar's wicked left hand, in the form of a jab,hook or uppercut.

I could be way off though and open to thoughts.

 

I'll stop short of being a wise ass and suggest that Arguello would stop him with a body punch, but I do think Arguello's body assault will tell the tale in a late round stoppage. Arguello was more ring savvy than Tito and would cut the ring off much better.

 

Hoya had pretty good power at 135 and Arguello was starting to slow down a bit. But, only slick moving boxers gave Arguello trouble and Hoya was the polar opposite. Hoya also had a good jab, but I don't see it keeping Alexis at bay and don't see him putting dents in his chin, unless he landed one of those big hooks. I see Arguello working and breaking him down throughout the fight for late stoppage or close UD 7-5.

 

I couldn't pick against Arguello in this fight.
