15 rounder. Still flying the Arguello banner confidently, I think he’d hand Sal a beating and stop him

I can't see Arguello banging out Sanchez but I do see him beating him.

Don't know, honestly. On one hand, Sanchez's overall effectiveness can't be exactly improved by gaining nine pounds. His stamina and movement can only decline, and his punch, never bone breaking at 126, would probably suffer at 135 too, so what's left? Intellect? Arguello had that too, plus great power and stamina, even if by 1981/82 he was getting a little stiff and clunky compared to earlier years.

    I guess Arguello.

These two would hypnotise each other.

Sal has the better defence and could squeak it. No money down.

Arguello was outboxed by Vilomar Fernandez, so it's not out of the question Sanchez could outbox Arguello in a close one. I think Sanchez is the slightly better boxer of the two, but Arguello has much devastating one punch power than Sanchez.

The question is as @salsanchezfan pointed out. Is how much moving up in weight would effect Sanchez.

Novice Nelson and Codwell may disagree.

 you think they're going to say Arguello has a better defence than the bestish fighter they fought?

No, they absolutely would not disagree.

Where's the stipulation this isn't at FW or SFW?

I imagine Nelson would likely say Whitaker had a better defence than Sal though.

Not that it's off any consequence whatsoever.

Azumah Nelson claimed the best defence on any fighter he faced was - wait for it - Mario “Azabache” Martinez.

Sal pulls off a couple of gorgeous parries against Nelson though, I remember clear as day, watch for them next time you watch that fight. My favourite parry ever  is Hopkins-Trinidad but there's one in Sal-Nelson where he just disparagingly knocks a straight punch out of the air, he doesn't even bother to counter it, it's very cool.

I don't think moving up is going to help Salvador, and he will feel Alexis' punch. Could he last the distance? Possibly, but most likely he gets stopped in the 14th.

I always wondered about this matchup. They were supposed to fight but fate intervened and sadly we never got to see this happen. Like others have said, as great as Sanchez was and I had a lot of respect for him, he was an accurate, but not overly big puncher. He'd be moving up in weight 9lbs. Fighting a bigger guy who could hit. I don't know whether moving up that much in weight is honestly going to make SS better. Keep in mind, as good as he was, he also had some close fights at his own weight. I don't necessarily see Sanchez as a better defensive fighter as some claim, he was straight up and did get hit too. There is a chance he could possibly outhustle Alexis, but I don't know with that weight jump. I'll go with Arguello in this one, probably by decision.
