The black bottle had never come into play, and he had a win over a ATG 140 pounder on his resume in Aaron Pryor?

And what if Marcel, instead of retiring, had given the up and coming extremely green Arguello a rematch?

How would those two wins push him up in the rankings?

If Arguello had the win over Pryor he'd be auto top 15 IMO and many might look at top 10. Tho i've never done a list i think i would have him around 20.

To be honest i've never much seen if held against him. Reversing it IMO would help a little but not a lot. Pryor however.........HUGE

Then again if he could have turned the trick on Aaron in the rematch it would help much more, as Pryor gained an incredible amount of respect from the AA win.

Arguello looked spent throughout the rematch. The first fight took a lot out of him, well Pryor took a lot out of him to be precise. His skills had eroded dramatically, especially his defense. Pryor wasn't quite as good either, but Arguello even more so. Technically he wasn't as tight.

Agreed, i am just going on the what if nature of the question. The truth is Alexis unfortunately never came close in either fight. If we somehow assume the black bottle won the first fight per the thread it would have helped Alexis heaps of course but not as much as a rematch win IMO. 5 to 10 places tho i'd say. People would have then said Pryor wasn't that proven, he was amateurish etc as well remember.

even though its the classic forum, not many know that much about boxing history. most people who post in this only know about durans career from the buchanon fight and onwards

not everyone who posts in these forums is an avid historian. lots come in to learn more about the history of the sport

you have probably been posting on this board longer than me, so you are probably right. if i was a bookie i would make you favourite

the reason i believe that many didn't know that fact is because not many talk about durans early careers and some of the great wins he achieved. its all from winning the title mostly

Don't forget Marcel was well away from fully established. Both were relative novices to where they eventually sat. Junior Lightweights in this one.

Into the top ten. The win over Pryor would have made him the first four-division crown holder.
