Correct SS, this is EXACTLY how it was seen right at the time. Arguello was highly lauded for seeking Pryor when he could have easily collected the record 4th title fighting one of the other much lesser champs. Of course the flip side to Arguello not fighting Serrano is would Serrano have actually accepted an Arguello challenge anyway? There goes his title and he may never have got another shot. Arguello might have also ruined him of course.

Marcel was a great, great fighter and there is no shame whatsoever in losing to him, especially considering the huge disparity in experience between the two when they met. Fernandez granted wasn`t a great fighter by any means, but he was a very good one however who like Marcel had a style that would always prove problematic for Alexis, you have heard of the old adage that styles make fights right?

As for Alexis and my thoughts on him for me this guy epitomized what a true world champion should be... he never showed up for a fight in anything less than 100% condition, always sought out the best opposition to show he could beat them and to leave no doubt as to who was the real champ.

Also, he was a true gentleman who never disrespected himself, the fans or the sport of boxing by making deragotary comments about his opponents, and always gave credit to his foes after a fight. He carried himself like a true champion and most importantly like a real man should, and many of todays` brash young alphabet soup title holders should take a page out his book and learn to comporte themselves like a champion should and not like some loudmouth punks.

Its not like arguello didnt outbox vilomar in the rematch. Arguello is one of my new favorites. I started to study him on film, and I couldnt believe how much he resembled joe louis. Arguello is one of the most smooth calm cool calculated fighters I have ever seen in the ring. His punching skills, accuracy and precisious are off the charts. His resume is oustanding, and if it werent for that black bottle who knows what would have happened in pryor I. I rank arguello top 2 130lber of all time. top 25 p4p of all time. I would have liked to see arguello vs sanchez or duran.

When Arguello lost to Marcel was because of two reasons:
1- Marcel was really great and skillful (elusive)
2- Arguello was still green (he was 22 I believe) even with all those fights under his belt.

Arguello was no like Sanchez who was alomost ready from the get go. Arguello had to learn more and was after that defeat that he learned. As a matter of fact he changed when Curro Dosman (I think he was Marcel's trainer) took him, and that's why he was able to win the title against Olivares.

If you compare the fight Arguello-Olivares with the fight Arguello-Marcel you will notice the difference in approach and also you will notice a more experienced Arguello. Arguello learned a bit more with the fight against Olivares and from that time on he was impressive, you could really see the difference especially if you see the fight Alexis Arguello vs Leonel Hernandez.

I have no doubts that the Arguello that defeated Hernandez would have defeated Marcel.

When Arguello lost to Vilomar Fernandez, (the only fight he lost from the time he defeated Olivares until the time he fought Pryor) was because Arguello did not push earlier. As usual, Arguello fought that fight really calm and the rounds went by without him attacking Fernandez. It was until the sixth (I think) round that Arguello really put pressure and connected some good shots to Fernadez.

You should not measure the quality of Arguello by just saying that he was outboxed by Fernandez....that sound to simple and is misleading. Arguello lost a 10 rounds fight against Fernandez the same way that Duran lost a ten round fight against DeJesus....**** happens and in both cases those two boxers (DeJesus and Fernandez) were good boxers. There is another thing and that is that if Arguello had fought a 15 round fight (instead) defending his title against Fernandez, I can guaranteed you that he would have defeated Fernandez crystal clear.

There is something that you are not mentioning and is the fact that Arguello beat Fernandez later on and also sent him to the canvas to win a UD. This prooves my point.

Yeah, so you're implying camacho was in his prime when he lost to tito and oscar, just brilliant.

    How is that implied?

You're talking about a shot Arguello having to prove himself against a prime Camacho to be top 10.

Carrying over the analogy, what was implied was that a SHOT Camacho had to win a round or two off the likes of DLH and Tito to give the indication that he could have matched them if he was in his prime, and therefore be great.

Arguello had nothing more to give and couldn't be top 10. And Camacho couldn't take rounds and couldn't be great.

    Capish? :good

You also fail to distinguish the size differential between tito/oscar and Hector. Hector Camacho is a 126-135ish fighter and both of those guys were large welterweights, hence why De La hoya jumped 5 weightclasses in less than 4 years.

Camacho himself was jumping weightclasses almost as much as Oscar was. Oscar himself started a lightweight. If Camacho is a 126-130 fighter, Oscar is a 130-135 fighter. At least Oscar had a fight at 130, anyway. How many did Hector have at 126?

For ****s sake, just look at the two when they fought each other. Hector was 112lbs as an amatuer, de la hoya was 132 as an amatuer.

Hector was between 130-140 for the first 12 years of his career. De La hoya already became a full fledged welterweight 4 years into his pro career.

In height there was a difference, but Camacho was the one coming down from a heigher weight to face Oscar and looked pretty filled out as a welter.

So how did Camacho go from being 112 as an amatuer to 134 for his FIRST pro fight?

Oscar camapigned at welter 4 years in, but he wasn't fully fledged there. He could have spent the better part of hsi career at 140 if he was disciplined and keen on weight draining like a lot of fighters do nowadays. He was good enough to campaign at heigher weights, and welterweight was the glamour division with all the names, so he spent the better half of his career there.

Hector is still clearly smaller than him, while argeullo and hector were about the same size.
