I think this is a pretty competitive fight the only problem I have is at what weight will they fight at. Gomez is a 147lb fighter and Chaver jr is at 160lb. This is bull why should Gomez have to go up to 160lb to get the fight. It should be at 154lbs.
I wasnt sure about the weight... in that case, its a toss-up for me. I think Gomez can get a decision though
Gomez gonna have to bloat himself to meet Chavez Jr at 160.. i agree its just BS... the fight should be at 154. but... you know.
Gomez fights comfortably around 150 to 154 dont exagerate, but 160 is pushing it.156 would have been a good halfway point for both. For some reason I though Wolak was supposed to fight Jr at a catchweight.
Gomez is the better technician and faster, Jr the much taller and bigger fighter. Should be a good fight, rolling with Gomez by decision, think he'll bank most of the rounds, but the fight becomes a war late.
I expect Gomez to win the first couple rounds with movement and some skill, but start getting beat up around the 4th, and i expect JR to steamroll him in the championship rounds, unless Alfonso gets on his bike. JR by 11th round TKO Not a great fight for JR but understandable given Alfonso's name, and if Gomez can win this one he will be on a nice little run as of late.
Gomez will be the best Chavez has faced by a decent margin, while the opposite will not be true (Cotto, obviously, being the name Gomez has on his resume that surpasses Chavez...and who would have pummeled even this new & improved version of the kid and at a weight that is not ideal, mental fissures and all). However... Youth & size & athleticism & the wild card that is the Wild Card should make the difference here. It's not like Gomez even has experience on his side, with Chavez having actually put in 33% more rounds in his pro career. On the other hand, Gomez undeniably has the more quality experience. That simply won't be enough to offset youth & size & athleticism & the Wild Card. Gomez doesn't have any spectacular standout trait to help him overcome those odds. Tenacity and having been baptized by fire can't unmake a mismatch - which is what this is at the present juncture.
This fight would have been better back in 07 when Chavez and Gomez was a welterweights. It would been either at 147 pounds or 150 catchweight. But 3 years later at 160 pounds? Sounds like bs fight by Chavez Jr in which he won't step up for a better fight then this. Gomez don't belong at 160 pounds.
It's no more a BS fight than Alvarez-Baldomir - and I like Alvarez way more than Chavez. Alvarez redeemed the bull**** factor of that fight by becoming the first world class boxer to knock Baldy out cold. If Chavez could make a similar statement by becoming the first to knock Gomez out cold, it would add a nice kick to the fermenting of an Alvarez-Chavez brew.
Gomez don't have a big punch to worry Chavez Jr. The onlything Gomez has is speed and better boxing skills but he will be small at 160 pounds. I see Chavez Jr tko Gomez in 8.
The different is Alvarez didn't struggle with some fights vs the same level opponents that Chavez face. And Alvarez if i recall like Chavez Jr, never went to the amateurs.
"except the age factor" - you don't think that's kind of a big deal? Also, Gomez is a more skilled operator than Baldomir. Also - you do realize that Gomez has had more fights at middleweight than Chavez, right? Twice as many, actually.
That won't mean ****. 2 Years ago Cotto beat the hell out of Gomez in which Gomez trainer stop the fight in the start of the 6th round.
