Wouldn't even be a good fight. Canelo would handle that ass easy.

Dont bother with this clown. He says Mercito Gesta is supposed to be a future ATG when he has faced even worse opposition than Canelo.

I can think of plenty of people that would beat this Gesta at LW.

This ginger fraud sure is protected.

Feasting on a bum that Cotto slaughtered almost 4 years ago.

Compared to Rhodes, Gomez is Sugar Ray Robinson.

Gomez is on par with some of Alvarez's best opponents but he is a welterweight, like Hatton, and I don't want to see Alvarez make a habit of this. It will be on the Mayweather ppv, it should be somewhat entertaining, until Alvarez takes over midway through the fight due to his size, and Alvarez has hinted at fighting in December as well so I'm ok with this fight but would have prefered Mayorga.

I've thought Alvarez should look to take a step up for a few fights now. He's proven he is clearly better than guys like Rhodes, Hatton, old versions of Baldomir and N'dou, smaller guys like Vasquez and Cotto, etc. Alvarez beats guys like this and fairly comfortably, why not take on a higher level of opposition. Not neccesarily an elite guy but atleast someone who is a consensus top 10 guy(I don't think Rhodes deserved to be), since Alvarez is rated top 10 or better himself by most. I thought Gomez was with Top Rank so its good to see the two biggest promoters working together again.

I don't know much about Gomez, so apologies for being the Forum Thread Dumbass on this one - help me out here...

Is this the same Gomez who was on that crappy Contender show, who got run down by Cotto with the ferocity of a freight train hitting a deer? The one that Cotto beat up so bad he apologised to him afterward and looked sorry for him while punching him, repeatedly, in the head? The one who, according to BoxRec, has done nothing of note since?

They're both Mexican I guess. And Alvarez is still young. But this is a step down from Ryan Rhodes, and a fight from which Canelo will learn both **** and All. This is the equivalent of Burns vs Laryea - a pointless money spinner.

Given Saul's immense popularity over in Mexico, however, they could put him in a fight against me and still make millions - and I'm not even a boxer. So in a ****ed up, purely business way it makes sense.

Doesn't mean I have to like it though.

Finally, a really credible test for Alvarez. (although some ignorant Boxrec warriors and/or Canelo haters will no doubt nitpick his record)

Huge upset win for Alfonso if he pulls it off, too.

    Big risk/reward both ways.

Canelo's 21 and the belt is little more than a trinket. Unless you want him to Vargas out and be done very early this level of competition is fine.

Gomez is not a welterweight. :patsch Idiots!

I don't know why Boxrec has him listed as one. He hasn't competed at welterweight in well over a year now. He's had almost 30 pro fights and like half a dozen have been at welterweight.

He's a career junior middleweight, with both his most recent bout and next scheduled one at 154. He should be rated there, not at 147. So take that "welterweight" tag up with Boxrec.

The people acting like he's some itty bitty dude getting picked on are just blowing smoke. He is the same size as Alvarez (although nowhere near as ripped). He is bigger than all the other world titlists at the weight (two inches on Cotto, three inches on K9 etc) and is not a scrawny beanpole. He's a beefy kid, and doesn't have a gym body but has that Mexican boxing physique that's stronger than it looks.
