As for the fight itself, everybody was kind of wrong.

Some of us thought it would be an out-and-out brawl and FOTY candidate (wrong; Gomez boxed, spoiled and even ran)

Some thought inactivity (or single blows from Kamegai) would hurt Gomez - nope.

I'm biased but I thought the fight was still an excellent fight. Gomez threw almost 800 punches and it isn't like he was pitter-pattering, Kamegai's head was constantly on a swivel. He just fought in a smart but still action-oriented way. And yet, like the Guerrero fight Kamegai kept coming and made life hard for Gomez all the while, especially in the last few rounds, and he threw over 600 punches himself. He just doesn't have any defense or good ability to cut off the ring, but his sheer relentless nature can beat a lot of fighters.

I'm not sure why people have this misconception but Gomez has never been a brawler. The most you can say on that score is that Gomez is an adaptive boxer-type that happens to be able to fight well on the inside when he needs to. If his opponent has a speed advantage on him, he cuts down the ring, times his opponents, and tries to make the fight a dogfight(a la the Porter fight), but he does so in a skillful manner. If he's clearly better technically and speed is less of a factor, he'll box more on the outside a la the JSK and Kamegai fights.
