The legend killer is on a five win streak as of his 2nd round TKO of Calvin "Killa" Green tonight. Gomez had been out of the ring for fourteen months and subsequently lost his top ten WBC ranking at welterweight. He met Green (coming down from middleweight off a loss to Sergio Mora) at a catchweight of 150. What next for The Gomez? Shall he try to seize his property back from Mike Jones? (that is, the WBC American Continental 147lb title that he had to vacate, which Jones won and defended in his pair of matches with Jesus Soto Karass...who Gomez himself had beaten to pick up the vacant belt back in '09...) Did anyone choose to watch Gomez vs. Calvin live on FSN instead of Hopkins vs. Pascal on HBO at the same time? Assuming there is nobody who did and can give feedback, we'll have to wait for Youtube to see for ourselves just how sharp Gomez looked shaking the rust in five minutes of work against the physically larger (inch or two taller and more muscled) infighting specialist.
I multi-tasked as a Gomez fan between the two. Gomez was relatively sharp considering the layoff, Green tried like he did against Sergio Mora to land hooks and caught Gomez a few times in Round 1, but for the most part Gomez counter-punched the crap out of him and followed off his countered with hard combinations to Green's head and body. The 2nd round was all Gomez as Green didn't land much of anything and midway through the round Gomez caught Green with a big straight right hand counter, followed up with some damaging combinations, then another big right counter that got Green in serious trouble. Gomez followed up against a wobbling Green and the ref called it. Slightly quick stoppage imo, though I have no doubt Green would not have made it out of the round and Alfonso had probably landed 70 punches or so on Green overall at that point. Alfonso said that he hoped to maybe get a fight with Saul Alvarez or get a big fight at Welterweight.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mesu_dfMfA[/ame] He is a real down to earth person. though he had the layoff he was keeping in shape for this fight he trained at the Legendary Azteca Boxing Club in Bell, CA. I got to see him spar Miguel Vazquez and I was shocked to see Vazquez dominate him. But still Gomez is a great guy who loves his fans.
I was watching both events simultaneously and therefore was not able to enjoy either one fully. Did I hear right when Gomez challenged both Ortiz and Canelo afterwards.
He congratulated Victor Ortiz for becoming Welterweight champion which is something that he's wanting, and then he said something to the effect of that he liked Alvarez but wanted to fight him in Spanish I believe.
The stoppage looks timely, to me. Two more shots would have had Green out cold and his arms weren't obeying well enough to stop anything else in that series from landing. Fantastic performance by Gomez.
