He was messy. Effective but messy. Hands always rolling in his stance, lots of wasted movement, drives me crazy to watch him. A braver guy you'll never see though. You could tear his face off and he'd just laugh at you.
Any man who carries a boa constrictor as part of his ring entrance has my immediate respect. No wonder he was fearless in the ring - he'd already done the hardest part before the fight started!
Longhorn, I'm not so sure they were Reyes gloves. i recall watching these live and i don't recall if it was the first or second fight, but I remember Cosell commenting that they were using 'Casanova' brand gloves and that they were known for their blood-letting. I never heard about their use again until years later when I asked an old-time Mexican fighter whom i got to know about 'Casanova' gloves. He said that was the only glove he ever fought with in Mexico and it wasn't until he moved north that he began wearing Everlast or Reyes gloves. When I asked why they were known for blood-letting, he told me readily, "because the stitching was on the outside".
Scar & Sal: Thanks guys......you "Experts" remembered better than me for fights 40 years ago. I don't even remember hearing of those "Casanova gloves" name....but do remember the "stitching"issue. Thanks again for the correct info.
