Alfredo Evangelista: 'Ten Count' Record 0-4 vs Ranked Top Ten Opponents -(Ring Magazine).....................Evangelista 05/16/77 .........Muhammad Ali..........WHC...........L 15............Unranked .............................(World Heavyweight Title)...................................... 11/10/78..........Larry Holmes.............WBC.........KO by 7.................# 6 .............................(World Boxing Council Heavyweight Title)................. 06/12/81..........Greg Page.................# 5..........KO by 2 .........Unranked 12/20/87..........Adilson Rodrigues.......# 8............L 10 ............Unranked
I think Adilson Rodrigues was rated in the top 10, Evangelista was unranked and Rodriguez was ranked 8th.
0 - 4 Against top 10 heavyweights yet he still managed to get two title shot! Damn I miss Don King! I always enjoy hearing posters exclaim that even though he was a crook and cheated fighters he was great for boxing!
Leon Spinks destroyed him too. Leon was making a comeback after being bitzed by Coetzee. Interestingly, Evangelista did decision Renaldo Snipes in Snipes first fight after being decisioned by Greg Page. I would be surprised if Spinks and Snipes were not in the top 10 at the time they fought Evangelista.
Remember gang its 'Ring Magazine' so i'm sure the WBA & WBC had more of these guys opponents in top ten listings. Spinks 01/12/80 was not ranked by Ring when he Ko'd Evangelista (Surprised myself) and I will go over Alfredo's fite record again. Thanku Nighttrain And I will check out Rodrigues, believe you are right, I stopped at Greg Page last nite. And need all the help I can get on these! -Snipes also surprised he was not in there! PS. -And its nice to chat with real boxing fans who know more about boxing than "Web Warrior insults)
I've met Don King twice, and he was great both times. one was valet parking at the Rio, in Las Vegas. Don was kinda a good luck charm for me. as I was out on a date both times!
It’s hard to find a good source for the monthly Ring ratings. Do use the annual Ring ratings on Boxrec or do you have another online source?
Nighttrain MAN I DID IT ALL BY MYSELF. Started about 1999 AFTER MY SPORTS WERE ALL OFFICIALLY DONE! Ring Magazine -1959 month to month to about 1995. I should be gettting calls from the Smithsonian Institution, I'm always doing "hardcore" never to be found stats, and in baseball, football also. I sent for inner library loan for microfilm newspapers of all Quarry's bouts ! that Annually Ring is only good for like one month ( usually December of that year )-yet people write thesis on it Ring I have earlier 50's month to month and they are all from newspapers. WBA 1966-75 HAVE ABOUT 80/120 LISTINGS, And that is not going to cut it! -I've contacted them trying to find legitimate month to months. they said they were destroyed in a fire! (BON-FIRE? LOL) And as far as the WBA goes, -Muhammad Ali had to win that title four times!
Ring Annually, I've seen where so called boxing experts use them for a fighter's top ten record, And if this is so reliable, then Duane Bobick really was the "Great White Hope!" 10-3 (7 Knockouts). Maybe they do not have the resources like I have, and spent a small fortune $ on the research. Example: Duane Bobick 2-2 (2 KO) Defeating Neumann # 10 and Wepner #9 (John Tate nor Bobick were ranked by RING When they fought 2/17/79. A Fighter vs top ten record should be based on when they were ranked when they climbed thru the ropes!
I have a very spotty magazine collection with some ancient issues thrown in here and there. There used to be an awesome Google site where they had the listings the ratings by month and year. It would be cool if people could build a list from their magazine archives listing the ratings by source, year and month. I think it would be more interesting and useful than the blood and guts arguments about who would win if you matched up Willie Meehan versus Scrapiron Johnson.
I'll throw a few bucks on "scrap" -I'm sorta trying to get a facebook together on Old boxing ratings yet do not know how to put it togetther! I have they heading done, and thats about it. Jerry Quarry's 'Ten Count' Record was a very credible 8-5-1 (w 4 knockouts). Yet I've had people tell me oh no Quarry was 14-8-1. thats from those Annual Ring listings, and where's Buster Mathis? (15-8-1 w/10 knockouts) They might as well count Quarry's draw's with Tony Alongi who was ranked # 8, with some sources # 6 by the WBA. (1964-65).
