Snipes was one of those split personality fighters who'd look great one fight, terrible the next. More puzzling, it wasn't due to the usual reasons like being terribly out of shape and as far as I know he wasn't dabbling in illegal substances, and even if he was, it was far less than others of his era.

That nobody was a British champion. Hughroy Curry. Decent fighter who wasn’t matched like a prospect that could beat decent guys like Funso Banjo and Glen Mccrory.

I wasn’t including Evangelista in that list. Maybe you should check my edit? I was saying his last few fights were all good guys. Back to back. It’s not like Renaldo was getting handpicked opponents was it?

Thanks for the info. He’s a name I’ve never come across. But he was 7-4-1 at the time so …

Hughroy was decent. But never sold a ticket. Never matched to win. Watched a lot of his fights. Much of his opponents were “area title” level guys. Men who won A title for regional areas of England. Prospects. Or fights he took in Europe. Competative fights. Among his wins were Dave Garside who beat Lucian Rodriguez, 20-0 Proud Kilimanjaro an African champion , Noel Quarless who knocked out John L Gardner, Anders Eklund and retired John Tate. Glenn Mccrory a future world cruiserweight champ. Was knocked out bad. Like I say, it was a lowly regarded but still competitive circuit where both guys wanted to win.

Thanks for the background. I didn’t mean to denigrate him. I have nothing but respect for any man (or woman) who steps into the ring … just judging by his record I figured it’s not a good loss for Alfredo coming off a win over Snipes that should have positioned him for another big U.S. fight/payday.

But you did not address or provide any evidence that he was awful & inept.
    You just asserted the premise.
If I made good points about his record, then it is impossible he was anything like you described.
    As Choklab wrote in part:

Evangelista was not a journeyman because he held titles and was a main event attraction in Europe. Didn't mean he was close to being a world beater either but He was a genuine lower tier top ten guy in his own right.
You are confusing being inferior to the very best in the world in his division-which means any weight class really-with being terrible.
You may also let his appearance & awkwardness bias you.

Lastly I do not think any Bantamweight is likely to beat a HW of this level even in a 4 rounder.
Assuming there are not extenuating circumstances like illness or not trying hard, it would only be possible if among the greatest BW ever basically pot-shotted & ran the whole fight, but not enough to be disqualified.
Were you among the best BWs in the world?

For some reason perhaps I'm mistaken because it's almost 40yrs now, I remember Snipes as being a "headcase" and was seen as difficult to work with by some trainers, and we never knew
What kind of performance we'd see from him from fight to fight.
His focus was all over the place at times.
Perhaps I'm mixing him up with someone else.
But To lose to a fighter like Evangelista even on an off night is almost a unforgivable sin for any contender in the top 10 lol.

Snipes was notable heavyweight contender for 18 months only
& did draw with Scott Frank during this time
