Algieri fought scared; didn't deserve to win

Agreed. Algieri by not letting himself get dragged into exchanges and a brawl, staying out of danger and by making Provo chase him, outlanding him as he dis so, imposed his style on his opponent. Provo could not force Algieri into fighting the fight he wanted. Algieri gets the nod.

As for effective aggression, obviously Provo takes that.

 

Pillow jabs? atsch PLODodnikov head looked like a pez dispenser, getting popped back at will for about 7 rounds until the eye shut.

 

Ring generalship means who controls the fight Algeri did not control the fight ! He was basically in survival mode the whole dam time ..Ruslan had the cleaner punching and the effective aggression ! I don't think you understand what ring generalship is !

 

I mean no offense Imp, but how did Provo control the fight? Also, let me be clear, I scored the fight for Provo. But it was ultra close and I have no problem seeing it go the other way.

But how did Provo control the fight? By being aggressive? Because he didn't do it any other way. Other than the always present threat of a KO which cannot be scored. The real estate was managed far better by Algieri, after the 1st round of course.

In short, despite being on the receiving end of the aggression, Algieri managed the distance the fight was fought at, and the style in which the vast majority of the was fought under. Provo could not force Algieri into fighting the fight he wanted. Algieri gets the nod in that department.

But again, I thought Provo's harder shots and aggression should have gotten him the nod, by a slim margin.

Provo was the one who backed up Algeri ,he brought the fight to him and had Algeri in survival mode after the KD's ..He also landed the cleaner blows ..The way he fought was a direct result of Ruslan's effective aggression .And Algeri had his moments but didn't do enough imo to get the win especially on pts after the 2 KD's ...

 

I'm inclined to agree a to a point. He was definitely in survival mode for a while after those KDs, and in those rounds, I'd give the edge to Provo in R/G. But Algieri would have fought the same type of fight vs Provo regardless. That's his fight. He's not a stand and trade guy.

Backing a guy up doesn't necessarily equal Ring Generalship. If you had 2 stand and trade guys, like Provo and Brandon Rios, then I'd probably say yeah, if Rios got backed up that'd mean he's being forced back. But Algieri was always going to back up, was always going to give ground and was always going to look to fight the fight at range. And in that regard, he succeeded for the most part in my book.

 

Yeah but Ageri was backed up by Ruslan's aggression which does constitute ring general ship he controlled the pace of the fight not Algeri..

Hope there is a rematch team Algeri knew they hot lucky and were in shock that they won.

 

Polls in this forum are pretty much split down the middle on who won so a close win either way seems fair.

Don't really think it was a lucky decision.

But a rematch would be a tough fight both.

I guess since Algieri is champ he can negotiate for a bigger ring which will help him more. 50 - 50.fight.

He gets credit for his aggression. But it doesn't necessarily equate to ring generalship round by round. They are separate scoring criteria.

I'd love a rematch.

Algieri is not good for boxing. No one cares. Who the hell wants to watch that guy run around the ring for 12 rounds? Very understandable that he comes from a kick boxing background. That is reflected in the ring.

 

It was a good fight but one which I find hard to score for Ruslan. Yes he got the 2 KD's in the 1st round but he couldn't really do a hell of a lot after that.

People saying "Algieri ran, was scared," etc are barking mad. It's a friggin style of fighting!!!!! Just because he doesn't chose to stand and trade with possibly the biggest, most ferocious combination puncher in the sport doesn't mean he's losing the fight. I mean for the f****** love of christ, if Algieri was genuinely scared, was genuinely in coward mode and just running the whole fight, then why in seven hells was Ruslan not able to cut off the ring more effectively and finish the job?!?!?!? The answer: Algieri was doing enough to keep Ruslan off him (which includes throwing and landing punches, as I'm sure compubox will confirm), and making effective use of the space in the ring (an 18ft square, where you're allowed to go anywhere in during the course of a fight).

People campaigning that Ruslan was "backing Algieri up" and should earn credit for "aggression," need to understand that unless it's EFFECTIVE aggression (which results in landed punches), then he should NOT be credited for it. Especially if he's walking on to combination punching from Algieri.

Look at the Garcia vs Herrera fight a few weeks ago. Look what happened there and look at the public response to who the real winner was. This fight was similar.....

People need to accept that boxing is not all about mindless, windmill, come forward heavy punching. If that's ALL you ever want to see, I suggest you confine your spectating to repeats of the Gatti Ward trilogy because it's clear to you can't appreciate the technical aspects of the sport, the actual "boxing."
