So what exactly was Ali’s relationship like with Louis, Robinson, Marciano and Patterson? Patterson and Ali said some pretty terrible things to each other, but I think it was to build up the fights they had. They had plenty of friendly moments too, before and after those fights. I think Robinson and him also got along fine, but I remember they weren’t without their disagreements, especially over his draft status. It probably helped that he was Ali’s boyhood hero, and that they never really had to compare each other, as they were in different weight classes. Robinson had the satisfaction of being superior p4p, but Ali could claim to be the best heavyweight and not have to compete with him. Marciano was pretty damn critical of a young Cassius Clay, but he unfortunately didn’t live to see him prove himself in his best moments, and I think they actually grew to have a genuine respect. Marciano’s brother brother later recalled Ali at Rocky’s funeral, and he was apparently nothing but class. Now from what I’ve heard, Louis was probably the most complicated. I’ve heard him say some things where you’d think he hated him honestly, but I’ve also seen them joke around, laugh and even be friendly. But there was also always something beneath the surface. I think they both knew that the other was their biggest competition in who was the greatest, and I’m pretty sure they were both on record as to saying they thought themselves to be the better fighter. I don’t know for sure about any of them though, and I’d love to hear anyone who does, or just some opinions.
Louis was the one that said "he would put Ali in his "Bum of the Month Club"...which was pretty funny at the time.
Louis’s legacy infringed on Ali’s claim to the GOAT throne, so he would poke at him. But Ali revered Joe Louis.
Honestly, it just sounds like another attempt to paint Ali as this great loveable character that everyone couldn't possibly dislike. You admit that Patterson hardly had a kind word to say about Ali and Ali in particular was pretty nasty to Floyd yet you try to excuse it by saying it was only to build up their fights and before and after the fights, they had many friendly with each other. Really? what many friendly moments do you really remember seeing? Its the same though to a lesser extent with the others because they were of a far older boxing generations, unlike Floyd and so not much interaction. Anyway the point is people don't always have to make excuses if some other boxers, ATG's or otherwise, disliked Ali or didn't think much of him as a fighter or as a person and Vise versa. You don't have to say they really were friendly or often joked with each other or really respected each other despite what nasty and disrespectful things they really say to each other. Just my opinion.
I don’t agree with your analysis of my question, and I believe your wrong about Patterson and Ali. Look up the article with a title along the lines of ‘the truth of Patterson and Ali.’ It was an interview with the man who wrote Floyd’s biography by the way. Hardly seem to hate each other. And could you provide proof that Ali and the other three didn’t at least respect each other?
If anyone should of been put up on a pedastol and treated with respect it was/is Joe Louis. Ali was a kid at the time. Joe Louis had to eat some **** and keep going. Even if Joe picks Floyd Patterson or whatever Ali should have took that and kept it moving. Joe Louis I would imagine had some envy seeing and hearing Ali talk so much ****. Louis was every bit as cocly and fearless as Ali. He had to agree to certain rules that we're beyond basics..and degrading so he wouldnt upset anyone too much. The promoters bring in guys like Joe Louis to discuss the upcoming bout. He is told to pick the underdog. I wouldnt take any of Louis's predictions too literal.
I could be wrong, but I believe Ali himself stated that he carried Patterson in one of their fights out of total respect.
I didn't think Marciano was that critical, atleast the video I saw. Just the sort of caveats with being a new champion who hadn't entirely proven himself. There's video of Ali being very complimentary to Rocky, but it was after he died, and Ali didn't want to disrespect the dead.
All great fighters respect each other as fighters but that’s not the same as respecting each other as a person. There is a difference between the two and I was just trying to point this out.
I remember reading just the opposite that he carried him to punish him like Terrell over calling him Clay if memory serves me correct.
A very fair point to make. But If your saying you believe Ali and these individuals lacked respect as people I would have to respectfully disagree.
Yes, that is the prevailing knowledge of the Patterson fight, but I saw an interview with Patterson’s biography writer and he says there was much less malice. If your interested, it should come up by looking up ‘Real Ali and Patterson fight’ or something. Can’t really try defending the man’s job on Terrell. I remember seeing in an interview that the two had met before, and he just called him what he thought his name was and got the hell beat out of him. But who knows if this is accurate.
You know...geez, I think I read that too, a long while back. To me it looks like Ali carried Patterson in both fights. I didn't see as much as of that mean, vicious look in Ali's eyes the way I did in most of his other fights. I think he might have carried Bob Foster some as well.
