    buster?? fleeman though is a good pick. that's the louisville fight that was hotter than **** and he eeked by on a close decision wasn't it? that was a really early one to

    The 19 year-old Cassius Clay 4-0-0 (3 KO's)
    takes on
    29 year-old Donnie Fleeman 35-11-1 (23 KO's)

    Fleeman was a puffed up Texas Light Heavyweight.
    Was OK, thru 1959. But failed miserably versus 190+ lb. guys.
    Had lost 5 of his last 7.

    Was knocked out in sparring, 2-days before the fight, by light-hitting Miami Light Heavyweight
    prospect Otha Brown.

    The Miami Beach Boxing Commission, remember those clowns, still sanctioned the fight.

    Cassius Clay spends 6 full rounds trying to take the guy out.
    Clay couldn't do it.
    Fleeman's corner stopped the fight after 6, claiming an injured rib.
    A horrible display, as Fleeman was faking it, and could have easily continued.

    Cassius Clay looked amateurish in trying to portray a Knock-Out Artist.

    Yes purely performances, BUT considering the context of many things.


    Ali at 35 didn't go down from the same Shavers who put Holmes, the third highest ranked Heavyweight on this website, down.

    The fact the he took the fight, is alone incredible, considering he could have easily skipped it. But he was always good for his word, Ali. He really had nothing to gain, except the approval of hardcore fans like us. Yet he went 15 rounds in a war with arguably the strongest puncher in history.

    Its a case, where you can put anybody in Ali's body during that fight, but unless they also have Ali's brain, its a quick loss. Ali turned it into a war earning the W at the end.


    So I dont think that the Ali vs Shavers is the 5th greatest edition of the fighter Muhammad Ali, but I think it is his 5th greatest performance.

    #44 Herb 'Gorilla' Siler.
    Fought Cassius Clay on 12/27/60

    Herb Siler was 1-1-0, and 25 years-old.
    Actually a pretty good 6' 1" 190 lb. fighter from Miami.
    He did hang with Clay for 3 pretty even rounds.
    Lost by TKO 4.

    Later on, won 8 straight, in compiling a 12-3-0 record.
    Lost to 26-bout Pro, Ernie Terrell in 1962.
    Then went into the dumpster after that.

    Ali has to get alot of credit for the Earnie Shavers bout.
    A foolish bout to take, in terms of absorbing damage at a later stage in his career.

    One of the few times I heard Ali boo'ed from the announced decision.
