Well said Unforgiven. :good Shavers thought he won on the night too, but after re-watching the fight, he admitted that Ali deserved the decision.
Shavers had too much respect for Ali. And had no idea how the rounds are scored properly (so as to avoid round-stealing).
Even a post Manilla Ali of 1977 would have enough left to beat the 1996 version of Tyson. In exactly the ways which you describe.
I dont think that version of Ali could put enough on Tyson to break his will. I think Tyson would stop him.
I haven't seen Ali-Shavers for a quite some time. Did Earnie have Ali in serious trouble at all? I ask, because, if he Ali was in big trouble, we should remember Tyson was a much more competent finisher than Shavers! Tyson's armoury, even in 1996, is much more versatile than Shavers ever was!
+1 For a big puncher; Shavers was a poor finisher. Unlike Mike. Ali in 1977 didn't have enough in the tank to "will" his way to victory. Tyson would have sparked him.
Yes, Shavers badly rocked Ali several times & while many pick Shavers as a harder puncher than Tyson, I do think it's relevant that Tillis thought Mike hit him at least as hard as Earnie did. I agree that even a '96 Tyson is a superior finisher than Shavers, but when I attempt to imagine '96 Tyson KO'ing '77 Ali, I think back to Tyson badly hurting Holy in '96 (5th round) with his only good combination of the fight; a left hook to the body & left uppercut to the jaw, once Holy was wobbled Tyson appeared to have forgotton how to finish, throwing sloppy misdirected uppercuts for Holy's chin, non of which landed remotely clean. However the more I ponder this match-up, I think Tyson could win by referee stoppage in the initial 5 rounds.
Tyson would have hurt Muhammad quite a lot in the first five rounds. But as shot as Ali was,he'd still be able to frustrate the hell out of Tyson, and psychologically dismantle him. The only two versions of Ali that I can envisage a 1996 Tyson beating, are the beginning and end ones of 1960-61,and 1980-81.
Indeed, rotting in prison completely destroyed Tyson mentally & I can certainly envisage Ali psychologically dismantling him. I'd add the disgustingly-shot Ali who lost to Neon Leon to the list of versions that '96 Tyson would beat.
Yeah but you can't win rounds just by doing a bit of a flurry in the last 30 seconds - otherwise Ali wouldn't have lost a round in his career!! Of the rounds posted earlier on here I gave Shavers the 2nd, the 4th, the 14th, and the 15th and all big (and one of the commentators said Shavers clearly won the 13th too), only the 3rd (of the rounds posted earlier) did I score to Ali - and even that I wouldn't say there was much in it - I'll have to watch the whole fight again soon but I think I had Shavers up by about 4 or 5 rounds at the end when I last watched it - Larry Merchant saying before the 14th how Shavers needed a knockout to win??!!! What an idiot that guy is?? Shavers was basically making the fight the whole time - Ali was just trying to steal the odd flurry whenever Shavers gave him a bit of breathing space - Ali got tagged with a frightening number of really hurtful shots in that one
