Zad, Well stated. Just hard to believe, Eddie Futch and Joe Frazier would allow Bobick to take such a risk. $250,000 to fight Norton. Or, ride it out, take some heat from the press for dodging tough fights, and grab the $2,000,000+ that he would have been guaranteed for an Ali fight. A Jimmy Young fight would have been much safer.
Yep. And lets face it, less of a physical toll and a loss easier to explain/absorb. Afterall even a loss would just been a decision to Jimmy. It would've been a half a step down the ladder is all. And you know Young signs the contract for the fight so it would not have been something hard to put together. Boxing is a funny sport sometimes w/ managerial decisions that can be second guessed. To me, it was a scenario in a monopoly game; put hotels on Mediterranean and Baltic and sit back thinking I've got the game won now.
...and to think, the pre-fight headline below didn't even concern one of the 'Easy 4'...That's how good Bugner was rated by the press before the 75 title defence. This content is protected
'Joltin Joe' Bugner,,,,,,,,,,,never brought that 'Hungarian' toughness with him. Kind of gave the impression that he didn't want to get hurt. Larry Middleton beats him up and breaks his jaw. Then, Duane Bobick beats up Middleton. Go figure?
atsch Are you telling me that Bugner couldn't take a punch? tell that to Ali, Frazier, Shavers, Bonecrusher and wepner? Anyways, Bugner would have beaten Bobick, and definitely rates way higher then him. Young would have decisioned both.
No, never said or hinted that Joe couldn't take a punch or wasn't tough. Just gave the impression that he didn't enjoy fighting or mixing it up. Played patty-cake with Jack Bodell, didn't he. Then Danny McAlinden shows everyone how to do it!!! What would you rather watch,,,2 Rounds of Danny Mac or 12 dreary rounds with Joe Bugner.
i think you probably know the answer.joe bugner was a huge let down.i really thought he was going to beat middleton, but know he was a let down again.i still think he'd have beaten bobick though. probably joes best fight was his losing effort against smokin' joe.after being knocked down he forget the cautious joe bit and really fought well against frazier.a gallant go.
I was rooting for Joe Bugner when I first saw him fight Ali. I thought he was the perfect foil for Ali. Boy, was I wrong. I think he was nicknamed 'The poser',,,,,,,,he wanted to protect his good looks, or is it curly locks.
the one thing he had in common with ali is that when he fought smaller opponets ie, joe billy frazier, he liked to push their heads down in clinches and lean on them.no wonder joe had a bad back
Yeah like the great Hugh McIlvanney said "Bugner had the physique of a Greek Statue, only with fewer moves".
They may have done mate, I was a bit young at the time but it's a perfect nickname, it was probably 'Lemon' flavour too. I do know that Emile Griffith could tell the flavour of a 'popsicle' just by sitting on one. :hey There was a show over here called The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. The title character fakes his own death and comes back in various disguises, including a pig farmer. In one episode he's sporting two black eyes and his boss asks him what happened. He answers: "It was the wife sir, she went mad, thought she was Joe Bugner". His boss replies: "When did Joe Bugner ever give anyone two black eyes?". :yep
Mr. Conteh......... Yes, I heard Emile likes to ride a tri-cycle with the seat taken off:good Also, Mr. Griffith has all of Bette Midler's albums.......
