Listen again. Ali said "In his heyday, he may have won... I probably would have. This is up to the imagination". You can argue all you want that Marciano would have beaten Ali. That's your right... but Ali did not said Marciano would have beaten him in that interview.
Marciano had lots of "sunday punches", including the left hook. Watch him catch the slick Harry "Kid" Matthews with a lunging left hook, stopping him abruptly: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMYQiar3AP0[/ame] Ali was not trying to show respect in the interview. Only a few minutes earlier he had said terrible things about all the other HW champions. At this point he realised he'd better be honest.
I think Marciano is the most underrated HW. A quick glance at his fight tapes don't tell the story of how good he really was.
You're clutching at straws, Scorpy. Listen to the intonation. Ali puts the stress on the word "would". At the beginning he fumbles and says "I", but he corrects himself and says "he". But the intonation makes it clear that he thinks Marciano would have won.:deal
Of course he is being kind, however, this is clear evidence that Marciano is underrated by the boxing community.
The only people who say Marciano is a bum are all the self-proclaimed "experts". Every fighter (outside of Holmes) has given him mad respect and say he'd be a hell of a difficult oppenent. Anybody with an iron jaw, bone crushing power, and the stamina to throw 100 punches a round is scary no matter how unrefined their technique is. I've heard Ali, Louis, Tyson, Toney and many more say Marciano was an absolute dog in the ring and would be the last guy they'd want to fight.
When they sparred and Marciano was getting in body shots Ali said he felt the power of Marciano to the body. I think Ali would beat Rock, and I am a huge Marciano fan, but Ali wouldn't walk away unscathed.
Only morons say Rocky Marciano was not a top 10 ATG at heavy. Nearly all the experts have him in the top 10. Marciano cleared out like 12 Ring Magazine top 10 guys in on his way up and while he held the title. He did what he had to do in HIS TIME. That must be respected. **** the haters.
Well said. Marciano may not have been the best boxer and he was a pretty crude swarmer overall, but he had one of the hardest punches in boxing, incredible stamina, a great beard, and incredible will to win. I don't know if I would put him in my top ten because of so-so comp and physical and skill advantages of other heavies, but he is still great. Respect the Rock.
Undefeated HW champ. No one else has done it. Even if he's at number ten on someones list, I wouldn't argue. Anything less, I disagree with. And to top it off I know his comp was weak, but he fought the guys in the top ten. He wasn't fighting guys with losing records or club fighters when he made it to the top. He fought the best available. That's all you can ask for in a fighter.
