Hmm, a slick boxer calling a slugger an "amateur"...Are boxers just naturally haters or something?

that's because sluggers look like amateurs at times with their very crude style, but the thing is they sometimes give the technically better boxer their hardest fighters because even though they lack in technical ability, they sometimes possess superior power, strength, mental toughness, stamina, and because they're crude, their punches come from angles you wouldn't expect, so yes, sometimes crude fighters are much tougher fights than a boxer would expect.

The man comes across as insecure sometimes. He's great, why tear someone else down to prove it? I suppose he got away with it a lot because he was good at charming people, unlike another well-known slick boxer today.

Ali at times was downright nasty, but like you said he gets away with it now because of his charming ways. yes Ali is one of my favourites.

I think Ali was an angry young man, angry with the way society was towards him growing up, and it was hard for him to just let go of that anger.
