I believe that Ali was manipulated by the Nation of Islam, he was the perfect candifate to promote their cause. If you watch the Ducumentary 'The Thrilla in Manila' the reporter asked Ali's doctor Dr. Ferdie Pacheco

Reporter: ' Was the Nation of Islam manipulating Ali?
Dr. Ferdie Pacheco : Of course, where are you from, thats amateurism and stupid, you should strike it out...... are you gonna ask me these question for th erest of the film?

    He needed them

    They needed him

They manipulated him no more than any other religion does to it's people. That religion just happened to advocated black power, which attracted him, during a time of black oppression.

If the world around you was telling you that your a 2nd rate human being because of your skin color, then you will probably be more likely to believe and submit your beliefs to the people telling you the opposite

Of course Ali was manipulated by the Nation of Islam.

Ali couldn't even pass the Draft Army entrance exam, and it was targeted for a sixth grade education.

Obviously the "slicksters" took advantage of him big time.

All religious conversion is a form of manipulation, so yes.

Very much so. Of course. As one very bland example, why would have have changed his name otherwise?

They also fulfilled him. For a time they were at the cutting edge of an aggressively posed version of a civil rights movement that suited his personality and ambition down to a tee. Ali needed to be manipulated, to fulfil a political destiny he could never have approached on his own.

    Yes, they did.
I don't think Ali has much regret about the money. He said in an interview his only regret was turning his back on Malcohm X, and of course he was manipulated into this by the NOI.

Boxers are always taken advantage of and manipulated.

Look at Joe Louis and how he was manipulated by the US government, and died penniless because of it.

Talk about people who can't read between the lines.

Don't you think that if slow Joe Louis could pass the Army entrance exam, Ali could also. Ali failed the test because he and the NOI wanted him to fail. :smoke

The "Honourable" Elijah Muhammad was a well known fraud who had several mistresses. I think i read it in the Ali book by Thomas Hauser.

The guy also equates himself to god. In one conference after the Liston fight he
says "Liston said he will tear up that pretty face, but Allah and myself said, no dont"

Pure lunatic. He was also responsible for Malcolm Xs assasination

Hell yes he manipulated by them...for all his ring wit and glibness, Ali was young, naive and incredibly dense.

The NOI appealed to Muhammad,at the time. At first,it was a social-political conversion,as the Nation appealed to Ali's sense of black pride, and belonging. Later on,Ali turned on to Orthodox Islam.

Thomas Hauser wrote Facing Ali, and was the default biographer for Ali. Hauser says Ali was manipulated by the Nation of Islam. In fact the Nation of Islam forced Ali's hand on Vietnam, by telling Ali to utter the famous quote, " No Vietcong call me N " Ali did not make this up himself.

Ali then smitted with the racists beliefs of the Nation of Islam also refers the news paper as the white man's devil news paper, and went out of his way to promote the Quarry fight by casting Quarry as the last white hope.
