I'm not afraid of getting it wrong now and then. Not going to stop me from expressing my excitement and optimism about prospects I feel are worthy. I'm pretty secure in the fact that I do indeed KSAB despite the occasional misfire. I once led the Grzegorz Proksa bandwagon, for instance. That one crashed and burned, sure...doesn't mean I am the least bit embarrassed or regretful about it.

I think you're like the only person besides me who was big on Andy Lee in that period of time as well. Took me until the Quillin fight to realise the mini-Wlad thing wasn't happening. :D

I thought for sure the kid was the goods and a surefire HOF'er. Not to mention E. Steward was going around saying **** to that effect and saying he was clowning Taylor in the gym and sparring competitively against Wlad. Totally dumbstruck when the Brian Vera fight happened. I don't think I talked to anybody for a couple days after that one.

Andy had some great fights tho. I had him beating Quillen, ok with the draw tho. He did look off vs Quillen imo

Manny was a great trainer and decent TV pundit and seems like he was a great person and for the most part he knew his stuff about this sport but he also talked inordinate amounts of shit and, like the rest of us (pertinent to our present conversation!) more than often enough to qualify as "human" got things SPECTACULARLY wrong. He thought Adonis Stevenson would unify and prove to be a top 5 h2h all-time light heavyweight. Yeesh.

I'm way more confident in Akhmedov reaching (and succeeding at) world level than I ever was in Proksa...even at the peak hype after he beat Sylvester and was still undefeated...and Proksa had more than double as much pro experience then as does Akhmedov now.

Over the years Steward expressed PLENTY of views and predictions that in hindsight ended up just as cringe-inducing as me thinking (briefly) that Proksa with his self-taught, entertaining and highly unorthodox style could hang with the likes of N'Dam, Jacobs, Pirog, and Golovkin. (the five of them were, back then, if you can believe it, considered peers, in some configuration or another topping most people's h2h middleweight lists!)

I don't even think his singing of Lee's praises is all that humiliating in retrospect. Lee absolutely had the potential to be the second or third best MW of his era, and even on his best night to be competitive with GGG and Grandmaster.

Absolutely. The thing with Proksa wasn't natural ability and talent - he was armed to the teeth with those. Over the years in boxing certain fundamentals have become glaringly important, like if you wanna have success at the world level - DO THESE THINGS AND DON'T DO THESE OTHER THINGS. Proksa laughed off that list and went out and winged it.

Not gonna lie, I thought he was gonna be a stud too.

Oh for sure, I'll always love the kid as a fighter and was always entertaining. I actually had Quillen eeking out the win, but ya I can go with the draw. Quillen is another one I thought would be a beast. I was pinching myself after the Jacobs debacle to see if that was really reality.

N'Dam has a TON of talent, the kids chin just can't hang though. When Jacobs and Andrade were in the AM's I was convinced they were surefire HOF'ers. My predictions turn out to be the equivalent of taking an inbounds pass in basketball and just launching it down the court somewhat in the direction of the hoop.

In a way I still kinda have mad respect for the little Icarus for doing that. Ballsy move.

Biggest stones I've ever seen in a ring for sure. I mean, literally took a look at the tried, true, and time-tested rules and gave them the Yao Ming face. It was only a matter of time, but man does it take some boulders to do that.

He had natural ability but not enough to be pulling off the **** he was doing.

I mean, nobody does. He thumbed his nose at literally all conventions of boxing fundamentals, like pistal said.
