It's a "Naw" from me. Funnily enough I used to work with a guy who swore blind that Muhammad won the first bout and that Joe won the second ! Variety is indeed the spice of life. As big an Ali fan as I am,I've always considered that Joe won this one. 9 - 6 in rounds - Joe got a "Two pointer" in stanzas 11 & 15 and Muhammad in the ninth. The FOTC certainly took more out of Joe than it did Muhammad but Arthur Mercante and one of the judges got it pretty much correct. As for the one who scored it 11-4 to Joe ? He must have been at a different fight on March 8th 1971.
Yeah, I don't know what fight Bill Recht was watching. Also regarding Mercante, didn't he say in his book he felt Ali was robbed?
I am going off memory here, as I can't get to my scorecard atm as I'm in bed, and would have to do quite a bit of looking as I haven't scored the fight in years. 1. 10-9 Ali 2. 10-9 Ali 3. 10-9 Ali 4. 10-9 Ali 5. 10-9 Ali 6. 10-9 Frazier 7. 10-9 Frazier. 8. 10-9 Frazier. 9. 10-9 Ali 10. 10-9 Ali 11. 10-9 Frazier though I could easily see a 10-8 12. Frazier 10-9 13. Frazier 10-9 14. Ali 10-9 15. Frazier 10-8 10 Point Must system 142-142 Draw. If I had to lean to someone, I'd give it to Frazier on the strength of his 2 big rounds in 11 and 15. RBR: Ali 8-7. I look forward to being gaslighted and told Idksab, or that I have an agenda even though Joe Frazier is my favorite fighter of all time.
Shuv your dumb sh1t at the end- it’s a respectable card don’t know why George is in the closet about it, I think it was close as it gets so chill.
Yes, going round by round it's certainly possible to give it to Ali. 1-5 could all reasonably be given to him since he's landing a lot of clean leather in every round. 9 was probably his since he staggered Joe in that round and 10 was very close and could be given to him as well. Then he had a good round late, either 13 or 14, so all in all 8 rds could plausibly be given to Ali. I personally haven't given all those rds to Ali when scoring it since it's rarely completely justified to give all the close rds to one fighter, but round by round the case can be done, I think.
Look at my break-down. I did it without having seen this, but said that all the rds you give Ali could plausible be given to him. So we have probably watched very much the same fight, I've just swung Joe's way for one or two of the close rounds and maybe one even.
I appreciate that entirely but the last part wasn't referring to you. It was referring to this forum as a general, as when somebody posts something ANYTHING that goes against the grain, they are crucified and ridiculed
If you give every round to Ali that every judge you gave him you can come up with a 9-6, or even 9-5-1 scorecard for him.
This is certainly one of the holy cows. I'd say that Leonard-Duran 1 is another. Also a close fight which like all close fights could have yielded a different result, but many here will lose it a bit if this simple fact is mentioned. Otherwise, I think most things are up for discussion here. You have some trolls that come and go, like El Gallo Negro, but the posters that have been here for a longer time will, with one notable exception, generally discuss things reasonably, I think.
