Ring Magazine Top 100 Punchers Include: Archie Moore (4) George Foreman (9) Earnie Shavers (10) Rocky Marciano (14) Sonny Liston (15) Bob Foster (17) Joe Frazier (39) Cleveland Williams (49) Ingemar Johansson (99) Now I'm aware that this list, along with my thread, aren't perfect but bear with me a moment: Ali has fought 5 of the Top 20 punchers of all time, 7 of the Top 50, and including exhibitions and sparring, 9 of the top 100. The fact that 5 of the top 20 punchers all landed blows on Ali without ever truly knocking him out is amazing. Now granted Moore and Williams were past their primes, Foster was a natural light-heavy, the fight with marciano was for that ludicrous computer program and he only sparred Johansson but still these are phenomenal stats and phenomenal fighters, many of whom landed great shots without denting his chin. If you include fantastic punchers that DIDN'T make this list like: Jerry Quarry, Ron Lyle, Henry Cooper it's even more impressive. Hell, throw in Patterson, Chuvalo and Holmes as solid but not SPECTACULAR punchers. Is there any fighter, at any weight class, who fought so many world class hitters and was never truly knocked out and very rarely even hurt? So the challenge is this: name the fighter you feel has the best chin in history and use the Ring 100, records and respective primes, anecdotes, whatever to prove it. BTW: I'm canadian so my vote goes to George Chuvalo
Ali definitely had an excellent chin, however, sadly, his toughness and all of the punishment he took later in his career may have contributed to the complications he has suffered later in life.
Depends on the criteria. Take Tyson and Holyfield, for example. Tyson could take more trauma in a fight without going down, but Holyfield had the better powers of recovery as he could come back with a power flurry after being badly rocked. In terms of pure punch resistance it is always wise to go for the stocky guys with the thick, short necks. Tyson, Holyfield, Mercer, Tua etc.
Mercer and Tua definitely belong on a list, especially considering they fought some pretty heavy bangers. I think Tyson gets WAY underrated for his chin which was incredibly solid. Holy is usually ranked quite high. Just looking at the fighters on Ali's resume though, notably a prime Earnie Shavers when Ali was way past it, it's damn impressive.
The fact that Chuvalo never went down and Ali did twice in his early career says a lot. And Chavez isn't human. It isn't fair putting him in this list either
Hagler maybe but McCall? Hagler fought some INCREDIBLE hitting and if you look at the ring 100 Hearns, Mugabi, Briscoe, Duran are all placed quite high and he brushed their punches off. McCall hasn't fought that level
I think Chuvalo followed by McCall are the two Heavyweights with the highest classed chins but I think Ali has a good case for third place.
I know I'm gonna get **** for this but Margarito is up there for me. I've never seen a guy take as many powerful blows to the head as Cotto gave to him, and not seem to be effected by them. I think it did effect him in the long run though because his chin was not the same in the Mosley fight, but then again he was not the same in the Mosley fight. All I know is Cotto hits just as hard as Mosley. Anyways I'm not saying he's number 1 but I thinks he's top 5 or top 10 all time for greatest chins. Chavez and McCall are ahead of him though.
