Always fun to see him talk "hype". He was his best promoter. Nobody sells a fight today like that. They might spout pointless crap like Ricardo Mayorga, but Ali really brought the show to his opponent.

This was the equivalent of going to Tyson's face and calling him out after he had disposed of Michael Spinks. Liston's destructive reputation was at its peak here.

A man who punches another in the face for a living shouldn't conduct himself like this - it's immoral.

Get in here and tell em,Burt.

The only problem I have with this is that almost everybody later on has imitated the trashtalk but only by doing it far worse than the original.

either he learned to tone it down or we grew to not taking him too seriously. First time around it must have looked prety anoying.

Around time of the promotion of the Wepner fight Ali became a little stale in his routine.

    Facing Ali p.220
"We were on 'The Mike Douglas Show'. When we took a break, Ali leans over and says, 'Hey Chuck. Do me a favor. When they come back on stage, call me an effing n****r' and I said to him 'Champ, I can't do that...I don't even like to use that word.' He said, 'No, no, no, we'll make it look like a grudge match and sell tickets."

Now, granted. This is Chuck Wepner's side of the story. There is little proof to this happening outside of the book the story has been printed in. Can't really seem to find the exact 'Mike Douglas Show' either.

Ali knew how to sell, then kinda drifted off after the Foreman fight. I'd say it was the damage sustained by a powerful freak like Foreman.

Still, Ali pre-1974 was one hell of a salesman.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ali was doing that in his prime. He was an admitted salesman even as far back as the early 1960's. This early article sheds light to his way of thinking:

He did a decent job selling even Ali-Holmes by claiming he would "kill" Holmes, and then confusing Holmes by cursing him which he was not known for.

Did you see "Muhammad and Larry"? Oh man that was so sad. Then to hear Ali still calling out Holmes after his drubbing. Such a great documentary with such a sad angle.

Interesting to see a young Tim Witherspoon and Aaron Snowell too.

Liston slapped Clay around at the Las Vegas casino, and Clay left the scene.

He threatened him. He didn't slap him. That myth, to the best of my knowledge, was started by Jack McKinney.
